Family Impact of an Expat Assignment

China is a critical destination for many expat assignments. The business interests of a significant number of businesses of all sizes from all over the world are tied to what they make or sell in China. Along with the managers of those businesses, come the families of those managers. For some, it’s a family adventure and for some it’s a trial.

Dalian: a Romance

Dalian: a Romance

By Mathew Klie-Cribb

With news of Shanghai Expat taking over Dalian’s expat website, I set off to spend the holiday weekend in Dalian.

On the tip of the Liaoning peninsula, up in the north, next to North Korea, Dalian is home to almost six million people. In its brief, 100 year existence (since 1899), Dalian has traded hands from China to the Japanese, the Japanese to the Russians, and the Russians back to the Chinese. Recently, Dalian has been getting more attention. In 2006 it was recognized as one of China’s top three tourism cities, and it has seen enormous foreign investment since it was declared an ‘Open City’ in 1984.

The Dalian Natural History Museum

By Mathew Klie-Cribb

The Dalian Natural History Museum: a family museum?

This museum is free for foreigners and fun for the kids. Other than that it’s a bit of a bore. The museum follows the typical Chinese style of one line of English for every entire board of Chinese. It leaves you wondering what’s really going on.

Hello ExPats,

Last Sunday turned out to be a near perfect day after all the rain earlier that morning. I was holding my breath early on but as our ExPats always do we rose to the occasion and we enjoyed a near record day of about 30 with some leaving early but we appreciate their dropping in to say hello and greeting their ExPat friends.

Behind The Networking Buzz

By Michael Connolly

Shanghai is abuzz with the murmur of networking. Every week in Shanghai,
countless events are held for ambitious fortune seekers relentlessly practicing
the art of handshaking, exchanging mingpian, and of course, building guanxi
or "relationships." Many residents in Shanghai will testify that attending
networking mixers is a great way to expand contacts, establish face-to-face
exposure, and in general, meet some interesting people.

The Rich Tighten Pockets; Online Shopping is New Obsession

Author: Lilien & Loch Educational Consulting Columnist, Ms. Xiao Liang, from National University of Singapore

Starting from the housing bubble and subprime mortgage crisis, to Wall Street's woes, to depression in gross domestic product, the Global Financial Crisis of 2008 has swapped almost every corner. It is the worst since the Great Depression in 1929.

United States, Spain, Portugal, Germany, Sweden, Finland are in recession and many more including China have been severely affected . On 19 December, Royal Bank of Scotland forecasted China’s 2009 Gross Domestic Product Growth to 5 percent, which is far behind the expected growth of 12 percent to meet GDP target, according to Mr. Li, Yizhong, the Minister of Industry and Information Technology.

Faith in Dalian: Being a Foreigner and a Christian in a Tier Two Chinese City
Editor's Note:  This article appeared as an iReport on the CNN website.  It was written by Han Sen.

DALIAN, China -- While the popular idea of the "West" in China may be American culture or democracy, the true basis of Western culture comes from its foundation on the Christian Religion. Christian churches in China have a long history, and certainly vastly different stereotypes in the minds of both residents and foreign visitors.

Religion in general is also a special issue in the Middle Kingdom, which has drastic perceptions in social and political contexts.

So as a visitor, the process of attending a church in the tier two city of Dalian can be a bit complex, confusing, and perhaps a bit worrisome.

From Dalian to you.

Think of a product you use everyday. An electric razor. A laptop computer. A television. A telephone. Your bed. Chances are, those products were not made in the United States.

The electric razor? Made in China. Laptops? China. Televisions? China.
