The Search For Modern China 1 Month ago
I'm not sure if this thread should be under "Travel" or another folder.

I'm currently reading the book, "The Search for Modern China", by Jonathan D. Spence.

It's an 800 page book, and so far I have read only 200 pages (up to the rule of Yuan Shikai).

However, I find this book very interesting and look forward to continuing the reading.

Has anyone else read this book?

If so, what do you think of it?

Andy

Have not read The Search for Modern China (1989). Sounds readable and informative.

I have been reading China:Alive in the Bitter Sea(1982) - personal account of first New York Times reporter (Fox Butterfield) allowed into China in 1980. Many changes since, but somethings haven't.

Any other summer reading lists about China?

Mao's Last Dancer by Li Cunxin is also another interesting read.

I read a book called "Culture Shock" forgot the author's name. It was reproduced a few years later with more information, I feel the book was spot on about everything mentioned. Good reading, entertaining. Talks about everything from history to law, from dining to making business, from staring squads to interesting habits.

In addition to "The Search for Modern China" by Jonathan D. Spence, the following books were recommended to me:

Oracle Bones: A Journey Between China's Past and Present
(Hardcover)
by Peter Hessler (Author)
(recommended by Chinamustard)

Wild Swans: Three Daughters of China
(Paperback)
by Jung Chang (Author)
(Also recommended by Chinamustard)

Mao's Last Dancer by Li Cunxin
(recommended by WhereIsHunter)

Culture Shock! China: A Survival Guide to Customs and Etiquette by Angela Eagan and Rebecca Weiner (Author)
(recommended by Huangdi101)

China: Alive in the Bitter Sea (Hardcover)
by Fox Butterfield (Author)
(recommended by Jim)

I will try to find some way to write an article summarizing these recommended books, updating as time goes by, and giving credit to those who recommend.
