WOW! Wow Imperator, you really took that one to heart - thank you for the lenghty & detailed response & the time you took to write it - I learned something.
I still think Olivier ought to go & interview 5 hotels managers - and maybe could write an article after that - but I'd be surprised if he did...
Once again HD, thank you for your generosity.

Oh and another thing, never forget that in most companies in China, there is a resentment for the foreign staff that can be making triple or higher salary. This was the case for me and I was higher than all my equal peers and I punished their lazy staff alot. They always liked to gang up on me with little nonsense things like, Mr CEO, why can that laowai drink a coke or coffee in class, then on my day off I'd get a phone call from my Pakistan manager saying, from now on only drink water or tea because this is China and most Chinese staff could not buy coke or coffee every day to attend my training seminars. They dared to say it looked unprofessional for me to do, how low they would go for revenge.
1) Yes they can afford, alot of them and to suggest otherwise is ignorance.
2) In professional 5 star trainings of hotels in USA, people not only drink coffee and coke, they eat bagels slopped with butter or cream cheese and doughnuts, fruit, and if afternoon, pizzas. Heck, Disney is one of the top hospitality programs in the world, I graduated from it myself, and they partied it up like it was New Year so don't ever shove me this professional crap at me again, Mr CEO.
On a footnote, it seems Westerners make even more money than the top paid non Chinese Asians, such as Pakistan. My direct leader was the Assistant GM and he made 10000RMB less than I did, I only knew after I left. Why did I leave? Several reasons, their human resourses pulled a nono by not properly getting visas ready for 2 Swedes making them illegal by a month and a half. As a result, when the Olympic visa policies started taking effect, this hotel was first to get told no to more foreigners. I didn't convert in time, oh well. Now the laws are so strict for hotels, they must submit photos to the labor bureau of all staff, to prove workers there are legit, gee I wonder why (sauna, KTV, massagie people)? Also, I got tired of pulling daggers from my back. I can handle alot but if it comes down to whether I should get out when I'm ahead or going Tony Soprano on the other managers, I best tow the line in this country. You would too. Hey, the money was nice and sets me up for a nice ride in the future so long as I keep on rolling here.

Hey Huangdi, you make a lot of sense on your two posts. As the foreigner, you are supposed to look smart, smile a lot and attend the right meetings without asking awkward questions in case others lose face. I did a stint at a large 5 * luxury resort hotel in Beijing as F & B Director with 400 staff under me. Everything was fine for a few weeks as I looked and assessed different operations and staff. But as soon as I initiated English training, guest service training, Health & Safety etc, I felt the stabbing in the back from all quarters. I wanted higher standards and they were already at their peak so got scared. End came for me when I wanted to see the file on my senior F & B Manager who I suspected was guanxi due to her lack of knowledge and time off. Everything came to a head and even the American GM was refused to see the CV or other details. I was dead and it was only a matter of time before I was on my bike. Final humiliation, I had to pay my airfares both ways unlike my contract (sic) and was cheated out of my salary and given 2 hours notice to leave. Did I do anything wrong, of course I did. I tried to bring standards of service and professionalism up to the correct level, what a silly boy I was! Golden rule - don't expect chinese to adjust to you, you must adjust 110% to them or they feel uncomfortable and will form an execution committee to get rid of the person who is trying to help them. Sad, Sad, Sad.

Hey guys
you really scare me ... I am only here since 3 weeks now. If I would experience such things myself I would just take the chance to leave as soon as possible or even earlier!
Thank god my hotel gave me a 3 month probation period!
Fingers crossed!
