This is an example of corrupt people with friends in the right places. It does happen, but it costs you a big brown envelope full of money and some serious 'guanxi'.

Mat, I most certainly didn't hand over any envelopes stuffed with money. It was all above board, as far as I am aware. It cost me just the basic visa fee and, of course, the medical exam charges.

Also, this college is not some shady setup. It's an established institution with a sprawling campus, with excellent premises and good work environment, and they're here to stay. I strongly doubt, from what I've seen of them, that they would resort to blatantly illegal practices. But of course I have no idea how they went about it. It may be possible that they paid something on my behalf, but I certainly am not aware of it.

However, even if you are right, I see no problem with the alternative I suggested, which was going to Hong Kong for a work visa once he got a job. Is that illegal too? And the experience in China would benefit him, as I mentioned earlier. It would be far better than landing up here after getting the job, with absolutely no idea what the environment looks or feels like.

And it may be easier to get the job if the "boss" can actually see him and talk to him. Some Chinese have hang-ups about "not being able to understand Indian English", and he may be able to set those doubts at rest by being here in person and talking to software people in the company. There's a lot more to it than just a visa.

Anyway, I'm not selling anything, so it's his choice

Hi Natesh,

Don't get me wrong, I wasn't talking about you handing over money. I was talking about your school having friends in the right places.

It's the schools that are not shady that have those kinds of contacts ('guanxi' and can pay the large sums of money to skip the usual process. It's common practice everywhere, and trust me I speak from experience.

Absolutely correct. If you check out this post that I wrote a while back you'll understand evrything.

This post contains the facts, not my opinion. I'm trying to help people by giving the correct advice.

Suggesting that he simply comes here on a tourist visa means that he will NOT be able to transfer to a work visa. Don't get all upset, this is a fact.

I'm trying to help, not to hinder. Neither am I denying that what you said happened to you is true. However by law it is not possible and I have met at least 20 teachers who have come into this problem.

I know the laws because I operate a school in Dalian.

I hope this clears that up.

Good luck finding a job and a visa,

Mat

Hey Mat, no problem. Of course I realize you mean well. Good man! Now I know whom to turn to when I run into difficulties with my own visa

It's a pity if he has to rule out the tourist visa option. Hope he can land a job without actually meeting anyone.

if working for a foreign company they can get you a work visa locally. I am sure with a finance major and a fortune 500 company they would get him the right visa if they wanted to hire him. The whole guanxi stuff is for those who are working for schools mostly or who want to just get a working visa because it lasts longer then a tourist visa. If that is the case then yes connections will benefit you, if you get a gig with a big company they will do it for you. I do not know a single person who went through any trouble getting a work visa for a company which was legitimate.

teaching is a whole different game, so if he wants to teach check with the school to see if they do it.

you can also renew a tourist visa locally if you have a friend to speak chinese.
