Re:Learning Mandarin in Dalian - Articles/Writers 6 Months ago
I am moving to Dalian with my family in August 2008. I hope to stay in the Kaifaqu as my child will go to school there. Can I please get a recommendation on a place to learn Mandarin (spoken and written)where they have a structured program for foreigners? I know Liao Ning Normal University has one but it is too far away. Thanks.

You could possibly try the Nationalities (Min Zhu) University.

Re:Living in Dalian 4 Months, 2 Weeks ago
Can someone help me PLEASE. I am really confused. I have been trying to find out if Dalian is OK as far as climate goes for my family esp my two children aged 2 and 11. We are coming from Singapore and have not been in a winter climate for 5 years. Some people and sites say its not cold and others complain that its bitterly cold. My question is can one walk comfortably outdoors properly attired and not feel like the cold is biting? I have been to Korea and Seoul was unbearably cold. Is that the same kind of cold that eats into your bones? Please help.

Secondly, can anyone recommend a local primary school that my son can attend in the Shahekou district that takes in foreigners?

Thank you!!!

I would say yes, that biting cold you felt in Seoul is similar to what you'll feel in Dalian winters, especially on windy days. It makes me laugh when people call Dalian winters mild. Chinese people often defend that description with a follow up such as, "well it's not as cold as Harbin." If you were from a Northern cold climate and used to worse winter weather then it might not seem so bad, but coming from Singapore I bet you'll wanna stay inside all winter.

Jess is quite right. I wear a full body sportsman's jacket with hood, scarf, gloves and still feel cold from the bitter winds. Its cold in the winter. Be ready for it.
