buddy i got information for you by my friends.take the documents to the security office including two passort copies and a photo.visa renew section is at second floor. You have to submit forms only, they will never ask any question. At the second window you have to submit 820 rmb,800 rmb for visa renewal while 20 rmb as they will post the documents at your given address.it's better if you use university postal address as it might be more safe.
i went to visa office by 26th feb,as 28th was the last date. They never asked me where am i living,or any question. After 7 days i got back my passport and went to the police office for registration along with house owner.

Yes Weev, funkymother is right, if you take the landlord and your passport with the entry stamp, unless they are going to be naughty you should have no problems. Good Luck

Depends, if you are now on a Z visa and want to switch to a different company before your contract expires, you will usually run into problems.( at least within the same province, I would guess not so much if you are moving to another province.) If you can get an official letter (with chop) form your current company saying they release you, it should make things easier.

As for the original posters problem, here is my take:

I assume when you say you have not "registered" you mean you are on a visa that requires a temporary residence permit. (F or L visa)

The only reason to register is to make it easier for you to get your next visa, no one ever asks for your yellow slip other than at the visa office.

Your concern sounds like it is based on the assumption that the law is "all foreigners must be registered." But actually the law is "All foreigners must register within 24 hours of arriving in China"

This difference allows you to exploit the system a little. If you find yourself in China without your temp. residence permit and you need to get a visa without leaving the PRC, just go to a hotel and stay 1 night. When you check out, ask for a copy of your temporary residence permit with the hotel security department's chop. (whenever a foreigner stays in a hotel in china, they are registered with the relevant PSB, regardless if they have already registered else ware) Take that paper with the chop to your local PSB within 48 hours and they should give you your residence permit. They may give you some trouble but they should give you what you need eventually.

I have done this a few times in Shanghai and it is much cheaper than leaving the country. (I have only tried this with foreigner-style hotels, not local ones.)

Well Well Well, look who I found? What's up, Bullitt? Coming back to Shanghai anytime soon?

Absolutely True. I've known people in more than a few cities who get their permit this way. It's a pain, but beats fighting with the PSB over visa issues. Each department always seems to have their own way of doing things.
