Another question: If I travel to the US or Europe, is using a credit card issued by a Chinese bank a better way to go or should I just change the money at a local bank?

I meant a Visa or Mastercard. Bank of China told my wife that it's really hard for foreigners to get a Visa or Mastercard at their bank, I was wondering if anyone else had any experience with this?

Getting a Credt Card here is actually quite easy.. BUT they require you to put a 'deposit' on the card and so it's only convenience is safety. B O C wanted 5000 on the card before they would issue it... Precautionary I'm sure but it takes away most of the benefits of having a card.......
I haven't used my yet out of China but watching locals pay 8 rmb in Carrefour just makes me laugh.. Power society status maker or what!
