When I was in Korea, why were many the "important" words in the newspapers written in Chinese?
In Korean state schools the students are expected to master 1500 Chinese characters (and are tested on them). There was a period of Sinophobia when this ceased, but the education authorities reintroduced the subject. No reciprocal arrangement in the other two Asian giants.
