ISP Trouble...Feedback please 1 Year, 10 Months ago
Hi everyone,
Since I returned to Dalian from Canada my internet service has been running at about 5% of the capacity I should have. I have been using Tie Tong cable for about four years with no problems, but since the earthquake in Taiwan my bandwidth hasn't recovered.
If I use Chinese sites I can download at 700kbps, but from abroad 20kbps (9am-12pm) or 300kbps at other times.
Is anyone else having the same problems with other ISPs?
I have called out the service engineer who told me that Tie Tong buys bandwidth from CNC and that it is out of their control. He also said that all of his foreign customers have been experiencing the same problems when visiting foreign sites.
Surprisingly they have offered to refund my annual fee (600rmb) minus 2 months at 80rmb. However before I chose another ISP I would like to get some input on which has the best speed and value for money.
Whilst I was in Fuxin I was using CNC which had lightning speeds for only 720rmb p/a.
Can anyone comment on their ISP for me? Especially anyone who uses torrents (BT to the Chinese) because many ISPs limit the number of connections that can be made.
Thanks in advance,
dalianmat

I've used Tie Tong in the past (2005) with very bad "real" connection speed. It was a business contract in Kaifaqu and immediately after it expired we changed provider.
Now I have CNC at home and China Telecom in office, I chosed two different providers because Internet connection is crucial for my work and if one provider have troubles or downtime I can use the other. Both are in Kaifaqu and both are working fine.
During the broken cables time China Telecom was performing much better than CNC connecting with both European and US based servers, in fact with CNC I was not able to connect to our mail server in USA. I have also to say that China Telecom recovered much faster than CNC.
I do not think that cables brake very frequently but I will recommend to stick with a "large" provider. When troubles come (and the big fish needs more water) the small players are obviously sacrificed in term of bandwidth.

Thanks for the info jure.I did a lot of research into this today and came to the same conclusions as you... Stick with the big players.
Tomorrow I'll be paying my 1100rmb for a 2mbs CNC connection. One thing I found quite surprising though is that all of the smaller providers offered the same speed at almost half the price. However when I asked them about connection speeds they were all quite honest about the fact that they are limited by CNC and hence slow when connecting to overseas. In fact given their honesty I was gob-smacked to say the least.
I can't wait until the new undersea cables are completed in 2008 giving China 60 times the bandwidth that they have now. I guess they lost too much face in the crash of this year.
