Re:If you do not like it here, why do you stay? 1 Year, 10 Months ago
I'm perfectly happy, but I have to say that sometimes I do bitch and complain. And I understand the impulse that causes others to do so as well, especially if they're newcomers.
I sometimes complain about things myself. And in some situations I believe it's perfectly fine.
If I see corrupt practices in workplaces, it irritates me, and I feel the need to discuss it.
If I hear people talking crap about Japanese people, it irritates me - because it's something that's wrong and unnecessary.
If I someone tries to cheat me, I ask them "Is your mother proud of you?" and I glare at them with a look of disappointment.
While I'm happy here with my current situation, I don't think we should turn a blind eye to such things. Of course, we can say "this is China," and it happens.
But I'm glad to say that the culture of "mei banfa/there's nothing I can do" is not something I've adopted.

Just for the record my first comments were directed not at those who sometimes complain, but more so at those who whine and never have anything good to say about China. I think we've all met people who fit nicely into that category.
I agree with what you've all said. My advice to anyone would be to find humour, if at all possible, in any of those bad days you might have.
I think a big difference between a newcomer and those of us who have been here for a while is the ability to handle these days and just laugh it out. Use of the language and a bit of street sense certainly go a long way here. But then there are always those days...
This is all in theory of course. Some (actually all) of the points pandapassport made are so true.
QUOTE: If I see corrupt practices in workplaces, it irritates me, and I feel the need to discuss it.
Here here, I can't argue with that one.
QUOTE: If I hear people talking crap about Japanese people, it irritates me - because it's something that's wrong and unnecessary.
Sad but true, I'm yet to meet a Chinese person who likes the Japanese. Get over it.
QUOTE: If I someone tries to cheat me, I ask them "Is your mother proud of you?" and I glare at them with a look of disappointment.
I'll have to add that one to my arsenal, thx pandapassport. If you need more I've got many a hilarious put down. A perfect example of how language aids us in laughing something off. I've had the whole row of street vendors laughing in the faces of people who try to cheat me. Make them feel the fool, it always works for me.
QUOTE: I don't think we should turn a blind eye to such things. Of course, we can say "this is China," and it happens.
How many times have I heard that before..."This is China" or "It's because of the population". Need I say more? Too many a bad excuse is given for problems in China.
Laowai meltdown? Been there, done that, got the t-shirt. I love the expression BTW.
My favorite is 'to be Laowaied', so fitting for so many occasions. lol

Reminds me of a quote I was recommended many years ago while eating "Indian" in the UK. If dissatisfied, ask the management: "Would you serve this food to your mother?" And it worked! I invariably had my plate whisked away and replaced by "food-of-the-gods".
Now THAT is what I miss here in Dalian -good "Indian" nosh!

I really like Dalian actually. I think some of the people who complain about it barely know they were born! They should see some of the scarred, dystopian industrial nightmarescapes that blight some other places in China!
I was in Wuhan for 3 years, which I didn't like, I just stayed because I met my wife. Then I came to Dalian. Believe me, this is paradise in comparison! Still a bit too much litter on the streets (at least in my area of Kaifaqu), but you can't have everything!
