Anyone know where to get wi-fi (free or otherwise) downtown?
I got a signal in front of the Kempinski Hotel, but it also asked for a password. , so probably not free.
No signal at Starbucks, McDonalds, KFC.

You can try using a wireless card put in your PCMCIA slot. The good thing about this card is that it can be used anywhere as long as there is cellphone signal. The bad things are it's slower than Wi-Fi (faster than 56K/s tho) and it's not free!(you have to pay about 2 grands total for the card and an annue service fee!)

I'll take "faster than 56K/s" to work anywhere - beats my (actual) ADSL rates at home.
Is "2 grands" (for card, annual service fee) = 2000 rmb?
Where do I buy?
Many thanks.

Jim, I was in Techno Valley last week looking at laptops, and I noticed that one was hooked up to a wifi connection called "McDonald's", which suggests that they (McD's) do have some kind of wifi connection. Whether or not they let members of the public use it, I've no idea!

Hmmm, interesting. Need to check this.
The McDonald's downtown (Parkland) has no wifi signal, but need to try other McD.
FYI, Amici (Xi'an Lu) and All's Well Coffee (near Olympic Square - not the downtown store) offer free, wired internet (with a cup of coffee, I guess). Starbucks has no internet. I-55 used to charge for wired internet, but I haven't checked recently.

At airport, my laptop picked up a wi-fi signal but I couldn't connect. Didn't ask for money or anything, just no connection.

It's at Olympic Square underground electronic store. Enter from the central entrance and you won't miss it. I wanted to buy one of those card, but since I already have a wireless LAN connection at home so i didn't. Let me know how do you like it if you do have one.

Airports have WIFI in someplaces but they usually bill through your mobile phone, when I was inb Beijing I had to send an sms out and get a message back with a username and password. I know bigger hotels have wifi, as for whether it is free or not that remains to be seen. You can check with Shangri La, I have seen it working in there when we were at a meeting but I never brought my laptop down to check it out. Also if you have the right mobile phone you can use it as a modem for our laptop. My Motorola a668 came with a cable and software which allows it to dial in using the mobile phone.
Of course if you are looking for just free wifi it will likely be a couple of years. Even in the US you can see there are struggles between companies and Gov't as to how much WIFI to give out. But it also requires more people to be walking around with wireless devices to connect. I would say it will be a few years before you find it in Dalian, unless you get a group together and create a movement to make Dalian on the bleeding edge of technology.

Alice's Restaurant also has free wi-fi. Coffee is 20 rmb, 10 am - 5 pm, but I found the wi fi connection a bit sluggish and a bit unstable.

Maybe WiMax in Dalian was vaporware!
