Post subject: The Box
The Box is, or was, a bar in the software park. Around the corner from Trustmart.
UPDATE: NOW OPEN (04/2006)
Now with pizza delivery, and - get this - real pepperoni!
(see below for more details)
Had some good times there last year.
It's currently closed for renovations, but it looks like it'll be back in business any day now. Fingers crossed.
For anyone at the Finance and Econ. Univ, Maritime Univ, DUT, Neusoft, or anyone else who's willing to make the trek - it'll be a great place to go when it's ready.
I'll keep ya posted...

Oh, by the way...
If anyone is in a situation where they are leaving Dalian, and they want to donate their old books --
drop 'em off at The Box. That way, other who are still here can check them out.
A make-shift English library of sorts. god knows we need one...
There's already a boat-load out there that me and my co-workers left there last year.

Thanks man.
The Box has officially reopened, and it's lookin' pretty nice.
Gao has installed a glass floor upstairs, so I expect in the summertime there will be very few ladies willing to go up there wearing a skirt...
They serve pizza there now too. And my buddy Derrick was in their kitchen the other day, telling their chef how to make it properly (cause he worked in a pizza joint before). So it's pretty decent now.

I may be mistaken, or an unwelcome voice, but I definitely preferred the old Box. It was better laid out and felt a lot more like a bar. The newly refurbished place now doesn't know what it wants to be; a KTV bar, a coffee bar, or a place for chinese yuppies. I get the feeling that the place is how chinese people think a western bar should be; throw in a couple of foreigners for an authentic experience. I can't imagine it ever being busy enough to have any kind of atmosphere either. Not worth the taxi fare out there if you live in town.

Tentative Box Party - Sun. Feb 19
We're hoping to have a girl doing some turn-tablin' stuff, compliments of yuki-san. Should be neato. Justin's assembling the Future troops, I'm gonna get some of my classmates out, and I think there might be a sizeable Japanese contingent.
SHould be some other people singing and playin guitar and what not.
All are welcome.

around 8 or 9pm. After nine, it should be started for sure.
They have food there too, if anyone wants to show early and have dinner there too. But, the only thing i can vouch for is the pizza. and the black pepper noodles.

Does anyone by chance have an address?
What's "Trustmart" in Chinese?

Trustmart is called Hao You Duo in Chinese. The stop before last for the #23 bus on Xue Yean Square (a big roundabout).
Personally I found the bar well decored, very friendly, but over priced (small beer RMB10/15+) for a regular hangout. Xi Xiang Bang Ma/Sincere Bar is by far the best in my book (the Tibettan bar on Wu Xi Lu, between Olympic and the canal).

The Box is okay, but it's too far away. I can't see myself going out there too often.
Plus, the rods on the foosball table are backwards.

Yuki did well, bringin out a DJ. Good show by the boys on guitar as well.
And Justin did well, making it home without a police escort.

if you live/work in the software park, the Box pizza delivery might a something you're interested in. ph: 84785538 Gao, the owner, speaks english, so if you phone and can't speak chinese, ask for Gao.
The got decent toppings like, pepperoni and italian sausage, which kinda set them apart from the many lousy pizza places in Dalian.
prices range from 32-48rmb for a medium pizza, 46-68rmb for a large. Small is about 20rmb or so.
There's also side dishes like omerice (dan bao fan), spaghetti, curry rice, hotwings, fish nuggets, onion rings, potato croquettes.
They're pretty good people (which is why I'm helping to spread the word). There aren't many other bar/cafe/western food places in that area, and hopefully we'll get a chance to have a few parties there. At the very least, it should be a great place to check world cup games on a big screen during the summer.

yes, but i dont want quantity... i am looking for quality. THE best place, where everybody is and where we all have the best atmosphere... an english speaking commentator would also be great.
