Ahh...my first post. Like most people I can think of many things to complain about, but rarely do I get to the point where I will do so in a form such as this. But enough is enough. I have been here 2 years. When I first discovered the I-55 coffee shop I was pleased by its apperance and menu and happy with the quality of my food. Then I got the bill. The food was expensive, but not exorbinant. However the fact that they charged 25 rmb for a Coca-cola was enough to turn me off and convince me I wouldn't be going back for lunch. The, several weeks/months later, I discovered the breakfast buffet. Ha! They got me. I was a frequenter of that Sat/Sun buffet for more than a year. At 65 rmb, for as much as you could eat and drink I thought, bring-it-on. Yet the last time I went they had upped the price to 85 rmb. The owner obviously spent a fair amount of money to have a huge, color, nicely designed sign put on an easil, by the front door that stated because of the rising cost of food, he unfortunately had to raise the price. Now I know food prices have risen in the last couple of years here, but not by 30%!!!!! Kick the price up 10 rmb..., fine, I'd still be going there. But what I couldn't believe was the fact that he had the audacity to say on his sign that he has always brought great quality food at reasonable prices. Are you kidding me? Oh well, guess I'm just a teacher on a teacher's salary, but I won't be going back. You know, we get ripped off by Chinese people enough simply because we're foreigners and they think we're rich, but getting ripped off by an American who own's a business here just rubs me the wrong way!

I felt that the quality of food warranted the price tag. Last weekend was the first time I made it out of bed early enough to enjoy the all you can eat buffet. I spent a couple of hours grazing and talking with friends all morning and definitely ate my fair share.. oh, and the luxury of having my eggs made to order was almost decadent. I did however mention that the french toast and pancakes could be improved.. and voiced my feeling to the manager. They were very accommodating and said they would look into it. I will be going back to see if they can do it...

I've never really liked the food at I-55 anyway (I've only eaten at the buffet though), but I just wanted to point out that the price of food has gone up a LOT worldwide. Inflation in China alone the past couple of years has exorbitant, so a thirty percent price increase could potentially be justified especially if the owner hasn't adjusted prices in a while. Perhaps you should go the opposite route and try angling for a pay raise from your school by citing the rising cost of food.

Though I haven't been to that certain venue, a rise in 20yuan really shouldnt be a big issue for foreigners. Honestly being a student i do agree that living on a limited income can be tough, but when we're talking about a matter of a few dollars it really isnt a big deal. Put it into perspective; fried rice or bacon & eggs?
