Re:DalianXpat only aimed at rich expats ??? 3 Months ago
Alexis, with all due respect I'm going to have to kindly suggest that it may not be the problem of the site as much as a problem with 1) your expectations and 2) you expectations.
1) Maybe you're expecting things to be as easy here as they were back home. They are not.
2) What are your expectations from this website?
I live out in KFQ and would think that it's actually harder to find quality entertainment at a reasonable price.
Sometimes you need to make your own entertainment and don't expect everyone else to do it for you.
I resurrected an old thread last month about a book swap. TrueKid answered my post. We got to discussing things, and finally she planned a book swap at Cafe Vienna on a Friday night. The buffet at Cafe Vienna is 40 kuai and it's decent western food. The beer is average (15 to 20 kuai for draft) for a place that caters mostly to expats. Quite a few people from the site came and we had a good time. I think Goldman, Jim (of Britton and Jim) and I were some of the oldest people there and the ages went down to early 20's.
Usually we hang out at some smallish bars in Five Color City where the beer is about the same price as above and the clientele is a good mix of local and expat and young and old.
Would you like to go climb Da Hei Shan? I've seen several threads in the past about people wanting to get a group together for that. That can cost as little as the train/bus for transportation up to the cost of a taxi and 20 kuai for admission to the temple at the top of the mountain.
Britton and Jim, Freeron, Yapi and I (all users on this site) as well as my other half all got together on Thursday for bowling, pizza, and beer in KFQ. A little expensive for me at about 20 kuai a game X 3 games, 15 kuai per per X 6 beers and the pizza, but but once a month it's not too bad. It came to about 100 kuai per person when we paid the bill at the bowling alley.
Do you want small local restaurants to hang out at? You can find those on your own. I do and I have. 3 kuai for local, bottled beer plus a dish or two for 8 to 18 kuai. Add a few friends and it can be really good, cheap fun. Want something more up-scale then check the restaurant reviews. The people who have been in the past will usually mention the prices. There are restaurants in all price ranges.
Yes, I see that you've started a thread on volleyball. First, realize that some people are out of town for the vacation week. Other people may not be interested in it. You may not get an immediate response. Don't be discouraged if you don't get a response in the first 30 minutes of your posting.
If you'd like to start a regular monthly/weekly meeting of some sort, why don't you talk to one of the mods or the admins? Come up with some suggestions and they may be willing to put something at the top of the page. (That's what TrueKid did with the book swap.)
You're only going to get as much out of the site (and REAL life) as you are willing to put into it. Furthermore, you can't be dependent on other people for your happiness and entertainment. If you are, you're going to always be unhappy and you're going to sound like a miserable git who people aren't going to want to hang out with.

Additionally, on the right side of the page I see mention of Strollers, Tin Whistle, and the buffet at the American School in Jin Shi Tan.
Have you ever been to Strollers? I've been to the one in Shenyang and found it quite enjoyable. If the one here in Dalian is anything like the one in Shenyang, it may be a place you'd enjoy.
One last thing, are all fun social events required to revolve around bars? Hey, I enjoy a good piss up as much as the next guy, but there's certainly more to life than hanging out at a bar.

I find this thread very weird. I have seen so many posts for so many types/ prices / age froups on this site. Rich xpats - a much overused term, in most cases we don't earn anything like our Western salaries. We are here for various reasons but maybe 000.05% of us earn Western salaries. One of the strengths of Daliasnxpat is that it is diverse in its postings from members and guests. I think this post is out of order

Hi Alexis,
I have to confirm your thoughts.
Dalian Xpat is defintely aimed at rich xpats.
I once sat together with Jim the founder and some of the mods(I have been mod here before under a different user name before lost the fun in the pretty communistic way the website is managed). They made clear to me that the website is amied at xpats with an income higher then 10000 RMB per month. They cannot avoid others joining the website but the groupe there are aiming at is in Chinese standards rich.
Sorry to state the truth again and I know that a lot of the guys will now come shout at te but I just had to tell the truth.
Peace

BlackeyedP and others,
Dalianxpat is a website welcoming all people of all differences. To be less would be discrimination. If you are insinuating discrimination here, its a sad day for all people. To say we don't allow people of color, who can truly know when its the internet? Unless you put up a photo and say its you, its hard to know. I have seen many photos here, a masked man, an ostrich, a transfestite (FunkyM), a clown, but its hard to know and the website doesn't ask you to put a person's photo, its allowed to put any photo, for fun. But I can assure you as clearly as I write here, people of color are here and define color? Because color may be many different types and if so we have all colors of people. I won't get into details but go to the member's list and see for yourself.
