Sometimes we may share the same comfort foods within a culture, but it's not necessarily traditional in your culture, and it could be something very common or very unusual, or it may be that your mom or someone prepared it a little differently than others.

COMFORT FOODS FOR ME:

black (red) tea with milk & sugar (Grandma gave this to me every morning from childhood)

macaroni and cheese (a simple cheap food she made for me often)

mashed potatoes with gravy (a common side dish as I grew up)

deviled eggs (hard boil the eggs, cut in half, take out yolk and mix with mayo, mustard, black pepper & salt, spoon back into white halves, sprinkle with paprika) http://www.echinacities.com

How I horrified my Chinese wife, when we moved to the UK. I gave her a list of my comfort foods and most of them she won't allow me to eat, "as they are bad for my health"!
Top of the list is a genuine Melton Mowbray Pork Pie; then real pork dripping on homemade bread; mature blue Stilton cheese; and fried cod/haddock ("tasteless and overrated" in her opinion)
We do agree on Thornton's chocolate however.

Gay fries!*
Brunswick Stew!
Meatloaf!
BOSTON BUTT!**

*Those from the south (US) will know what they are.

**Must be slow roasted on a grill (gas or charcoal is ok) then pulled, put in an iron pot and topped with bbq sauce and slow simmered... Served on sesame buns with chips, cole slaw, and baked beans on the side!

Comfort food = Country food
Don't give me no fancy ass dolled up snacks with lots of flowers. I want simple, stick-to-the-ribs, country cookin' that'll make you stand up and slap ya mamma!
