hi guys, am relocating to Dalian indefinitely and was wondering where to go for basic food shopping (bread, milk, fruit etc). also, where is the best place to catch up with other expats on a weekend? cheers.

Hey Ethan,
Dalian has a lot of open markets where you can get your basic stuff. You'll probably be able to find one within a few blocks of your apartment.
We (we?) also have Wal-Marts and Carrefours and other such supermarkets that are also conveniently located. They're usually more expensive than the open markets (of course), but the quality is a lot better.
If it's imported foreign food you're after, there are a few places around town where pick some up. I usually go to MyKal. It located in ShengLi Square, downtown. It's a big tall pink department store. Can't miss it. There's also The Friendship Store, located just off of Zhong Shan Square. Carrefour also has a few foreign goods as well. Don't expect much from these places, though. I usually just pick up good cheese, pasta sauce, barbecue sauce, and a few other condiments.
As far as meeting expats is concerned, I think Noah's Ark (behind Renmin Square, next to the flower shop) or Tin Whistle (behind the ShangRi La) are probably the best places to get drink. There are a few other places around, but I think they're usually hit-and-miss.
Hope this helps. Have fun!

Hello Ethan, there is another big store to get imported food, real western food, it's "Metro" near light train stationin at Xiang Lu Jiao stop. I think it is fit for foreigner.
Also there is a easy chance to know many expats in Dalian, we have a weekly dinner or other activities in downtown, some foreigners and some chineses like to join it. we can send email or msg to you if you are interested it.

The market under Labour park is also handy. It's the best place for meats (English style sausages, pastrami etc.), cheese(only mozza) and also a few other dried goods. It's also the cheapest.
Otherwise Metro and Carrefour.

Hi Ethan, am a new Aussie Lass in town and wondered if you've caught up with any expats? I live in Shanghai and Friday nights we meet at the Australian Business Connections bar for a few cold Fosters. Only been here a week and missing it already! Anyway, if you've got any places to recommend for a newcomer, please let me know. Thanks!

Two suggestions where to go for western company. Both places are located on Chang Jiang Lu behind the Shangrila Hotel. Just pass between Shangrila and Furama, next street at the end is Chang Jiang Lu, there turn right, both pubs are on the right side just three or four houses apart. Very mixed crowd from Ireland to Canada, from Greece to Australia and wherever people come from.
1. The Hole in the Wall
Very nice westen pub, run by an irishman, with zero harrassment factor (mostly important for males who get tired of the "may I have a drink, you like massage"-atmosphere of many other places in that region. It's located in Chang Jiang Road (长江&#36335

No. 14.
2. Tinwhistle Pub
Also very nice pub run by irish guys, even when the furniture is a litte too dark for my taste. Harrassment factor for male visitors is also here at a relaxing Zero.
Another place that is quite nice but unfortunately a little empty is Coco's in Tianjin Street (天津&#34903

, a little off the beaten track. Come from Zhongshan Square and go down to Tianjin Street. It's in the right hand branch of Tianjin Street, the pedestrian zone, at the left side. I don't recall the name of the street from Zhongshan Square and my map is with some colleagues from home who needed to find their way ) But it's easy to find. Will be a nice place in summer when they got tables outside.
Another one that looks nice for next summer could be in the new built complex next to Xinghai square, in front of the four towers and the castle. When i worked my way through the snow some time ago it looked like this french restaurant from next to Xinghai Square, Gauche de Moulin, will build a restaurant terrace there. Might become one of the few places in Dalian where you can sit outside and sip your coffee in the afternoon with a view of the sea. Does anybody know more about this "might-be" place?

DILJO (just love that name...where did you get it? , YOU ARE A STAR!!! Thanks so much for this priceless information. Sadly I missed the boy's soccer game yesterday as I got there too late and wandered around the Parkson supermarket to cure my homesickness......sad hey! I was seriously considering throwing in the towel last night and heading back to Shanghai but now I know there is life out there! I shall definitely buy you a beer or two when we meet. If you email me directly I can send you my home number (can u do this on this site.....hmm.......not quite sure). Actually, I'll send anyone my home number....it hasn't rung in 10 days. Doesn't do much for a girl's ego you know! Well, looks like this week's gonna shape up a little better than last week. Thanks so much Diljo!

Looking forward to that beer somewhere soon!
Oh, and the name ... just a little distorted mix of my real ones. I wondered if i can use it like that without being ambiguous ... glad to see it's not too bad

Sure do I know what you mean ... so it IS ambiguous after all
Thought about making it JoDi ... but it's ok as it is I guess.
And how did the old Romans put it: Nomen Est Omen

Well I only made it to one pub as I got soooo lost. Hole in the Wall was great........very good recommendation! Set up like an Irish Pub with dark wooden bars & stools and Irish memorabillia etc. The barman was Irish of course and was friendly, courteous and helpful. There were also plenty of drinks to choose from.
Am having a much better time thanks to this webbsite and fellow expats. Well done Jim!
Oh Diljo. Nomen Est Omen - so your "name is an omen". No need to be too embarrassed, we're all grown ups here. Hope it's a "good omen" for you!
