I am new in town, and will be here for the next 6 months.
I like football and socialising, what can everyone suggest as the best places to go etc?

Outdoor places to go are Tiger Beach, Labor Park, and Dalian Zoo. A nice short trip is to take the chingwai (rapid transit) to Jinshitan for the day - cost 8RMB one way. For 66 RMB you take a series of buses to 6 different places Mao museum, Modeling School, Martial Arts, golf course, Rock museum, and the beach. Admission is included.
