What part of town do most Expats live??? 2 Years, 1 Month ago
Hi everyone,

I'm new on here, and signed up because I'll be moving to Dalian in late January 2007. I'm trying to do some research about the city online, but haven't come across much with regard to where expats tend to live. I'm a single, 28yr old male, and I'd like to stay in a clean and safe part of town, but with fun things to do too.

My employer is covering the cost of the apartment, and I'm looking for something with 3 bedrooms and 100+ sq/m.
At this point, money isn't an issue and I'll take all suggestions and sort through them with my employer later.

Any assistance is appreciated.

Thanks,

Chris

Foreigners are spread out all over town. Despite a six million+ population, Dalian isn't that big in size. Where ever you live, you probably won't be more than 20 "taxi" minutes from your favourite pub (Tin Whistle, Hole in the Wall, Noah's Ark, Nepalese...). Cabs are easily affordable.

Peace Square, Olympic Square, Zhong Shan Square, 38 Square, and People's Square are all relatively close to downtown, and all probably have apartments you are looking for.

i'd find out where your employers are based first and give more information about who they are. chinese company vs foreign company could make a lot of difference.

also, the term "located in dalian" can be used a little disingeniously by the locals. it could mean in the 5 square km downtown business district or it could mean anywhere in greater dalian city, the boundaries of which are 4 hours drive away, and very much rural. it's unlikely you'll be more than an hour away, but it's possible you'll be in the new development zone, 45 km away, which is in effect a different city. this is how dalian gets half of its officially quoted six million people - they just make the boundaries enormous. you could on this rationale say that london had 25 million.

also, if your employers are chinese, just because they say they will provide accomodation doesn't mean that you will get what you want, where you want. if you are lucky you will be able to find yourself a serviced apartment and just hand them the bill. but be aware that they will probably already own apartments for employees and use all manner of tricks to try and steer you into an empty one of them, however unsuitable it might be, rather than pay extra.
