Hello- I have been offered a teaching job in Dalian. They have offered me 4800 RMB and free living accommodations. IS this reasonable??. Also, does anyone know about getting medical attention in Dalian? Are there good places anyone knows of?
It all depends on the type of establishment danamanda. If you look through the forum, you will see a lot of very good past info on salaries from our wonderful posters. Then you can relate it to your offer. Good luck
ps - there are also lots of comments in the forum, on medical care both good and bad.
Yes it depends on your experience. You can read this following E-book on "Foreign Teachers - Working and Living Guide in China" from the following link. Some one already gave this information and link in this forum. Really this book is very informative. www.middlekingdomlife.com
If you have problems in downloading, then pl PM me.
That said 'Crevat Emptor' - They'll promise the world and deliver... well... what ever they deliver.
Also unless you have studied mandarin, prepare for feelings of culture shock more intense than if you were just moving to an English speaking country.
Finally if you are not overly adventurious and dont want some sort of intense experience where you are isolated and lonely because you dont understand the lang. and culture but seem to overcome it all at the end of your contract like some B-Grade movie, don't take a job in remoter areas of china - stick to major cities.
FYI 4800 RMB is the maximum salary any foreigner can be paid without having to pay any taxes.
You have to provide more details in order for us to tell you whether this is a good deal or not. How many hours will you have to teach? Will this be a public school or a private language training centre?
One thing you must keep in mind is that Dalian is not a very cheap city to live in -- especially if you will be doing a lot of dining out at Western restaurants, hanging out at bars, or doing a lot of shopping.
How many hours per week is this, per month? If this is a fulltime job with, say 20-25 classes a week, this us not a good deal and even they provide you accomodations, unless its new with nice furnature, internet, cable tv with tv from the new millenium, western toilet, clean kitchen, and no mold on any walls, you are getting the shaft and with the shortage of foreigners in China due to Olympics, you could go elsewhere for better or bargain for higher pay, non taxable. Most companies that claim to pay taxes are greasing their own boss's pockets and maybe handing out red pockets. Future School pays 6200 minus 205 for taxes and middle schools usually start at 6000. English First starts with at least 5500 and offer much overtime for over 8000 a month. I knew a guy who made 8000 at Talenty as well. Unless you are urgently needing this work, sell yourself more for a better deal.
