If you are employed by an international school that requires BC College of teacher membership, but decide to stay on in China at a university post, make sure to pay the BC College's fee or you could get a surprise when you return. I paid the fee up to 2005 and worked for two more years in Dalian. The College said I was working there illegally, but I responded by saying I met the university's requirements of having a degree - no teacher training was required. They want a "reinstatement fee" of $300 from me for those two years, plus $90 for the current year, plus $20 for police check, plus 2 letters of recommendation from non-relatives.
Make sure to ask for a "statement of service" a short description of the details of your assignment with start and end dates, as well as a "letter of reference" from your supervisor. You will need these to prove you were teaching. Check their website for the non-practising fee of $45/yr. They are under no obligation to inform you of your status, fees due, etc.
