Hey goldman love the picture eh! Olivier we all know about French patriotism. Many parts of France you go to and even if they know English they won't speak it. Britanny and Normandy are ok but as you get down near the Loire Valley and come back up through the NW coast no! In the main British people are recently very well travelled and are into learning languages eg I learnt Arabic in just over a year. So I beg to differ

It is true that the French are usually considered arrogant (especially by the Anglo Saxons)...
The last time the French stood up was during the revolution, 219 years ago...
I believe that part of the "arrogance" perceptible nowadays, has its roots in the collective reaction to being put on our knees and have our heads cut off - we will not let it happen again...
.

I find French expatriates to be of better company than the ones that don't travel... but that is the case for most nationalities; I agree that the Brits are usually well traveled and RickUs4, I commend you for your efforts to learn foreign languages.

Most expats outside of their own country are pretty good people because they mix with others that maybe they would never mix with in their own community. It makes us a more ameniable animal to be a bit more adaptable and acceptable which is the game to play if we want to fit in.

? did you mean amiable?

I don't really see it as "a want to fit in", maybe more the expression of a larger capacity of acceptance and tolerance...

I think the "fitting in" game that is played on the "home field" leads to smaller and more contrived, frustrated people.

I lived there for a long time , and it's different than before .
