My top three lessons 5 Months, 3 Weeks ago
(1) Extreme Adjectives: http://www.onestopenglish.com/section.asp?docid=147585

(2) Practice using present unreal conditionals by discussing what the following three characters from the Chinese classic novel Outlaws of the Marsh (水浒传) would be doing if they were real and currently living in your current city:

Wu Song 武松 e.g. cop, zookeeper, fighter.
Wu Da 武大 e.g. cook, clown, restaurateur.
Pan Jin-Lian 潘金莲 e.g. seamstress, actress, KTV hostess.
Xi-Men Qing 西门庆 e.g. doctor, nurse, drug dealer.
Wang Po 王婆 e.g. matchmaker, bar owner, mamasan.

Then I get the students to perform a short play based on these characters but changing their profession and the relationship between them (e.g. Wu Song in love with Wang Po or even Wu Da in love with Xi-Men Qing). Finally, just to make the entire activity extremely crazy, I tell them that only boys can play the role of Pan Jin-Lian!

(3) Practice giving instructions by teaching the foreign teacher how to make dumplings -- in English (Note: The FT should at least have seen how dumplings are made before attempting to teach this lesson!)

Simple phrases for sequencing: to begin with, first (of all), second, third, later, then, next, after that, last (but not least), finally, etc.

Useful (and possibly new) vocabulary: dough, wrap, rolling pin, float, surface, boil, mix, mixture, slice, cut, chop, etc.

Vegebables: celery, onion, garlic, radish, leek, Chinese cabbage, ginger, etc.

Meat: pork, beef, donkey meat, lamb, etc.

Seasonings: Monosodium Glutamate (MSG), soy(a) sauce, vinegar, salt, sesame oil, pepper, etc.

Guide the students throughout the entire process step by step. The important thing is to show them that though as tedious and as difficult as it may seem, teaching someone how to make dumplings in English is not as hard as they may think. Also, teach them the concept of open/free thinking by demonstrating that not everyone would have the same opinion on what to do first.

I have taught these three lessons for over three years and the students have always had a blast with them.

Good luck!

Good lessons for those who are teaching college students with average level. I taught this, this semester too, but I think your method is better.

Thanks man.

You've got a wonderful way to joint an foreigner language in chinese culture, totally different of the tradional chinese boring method, and also a little far away from the real west colledge education manners.

All i could say is WONDERFUL JOB! Congratulations!

You are a very excellent teacher!!
This year we had an excellent teacher too. He named this method of teaching english as Creative English. We did crazy short play or presentation every other week.
" Do whatever you want to do, Be whomever you want to be" that's what i sense from his lesson.we feel so much fun in learning english.
But there's a problem- because everybody is so intent on performance and he doesn't wanna interrupt, our mistakes are not corrected in time.
Though people often say language is for communication...but how could a student majors in english speak "chinglish" after graduation??
