I have a friend who has a new apartment for rent in the new Build at Peace Plaza. Its very nicely decked out and it has a great view of Xinghai Sq and the sea. Now its small and a tad expensive but I told him I would try.

Cost: 2500 per month plus some other expenses
which would make it 2800pm roughly.

One year ago I was renting a very nice new luxurious appartment, furnished with IKEA and little over 50m2 in Shanghai. This cost me 2800RMB/month. I don't know why Dalian thinks it is comparable to Shanghai, but the prices seem to be heading that direction.
Lately I also witnessed F2 club raising their beer price to Shanghai prices and the Dalian Bowling ally is already more expensive then Shanghai.
My salary doesn;t seem to be going up in the same way though...

I totally agree with you. This is way out but then I did say I was just posting for a friend of mine. If the market demands then thats what will be paid. I think Dalian is as bad as Shanghai now but what can we do..

I'm sure Dalian prices have been on the rise, but it is still much cheaper than Shanghai. That apartment in Shanghai would not go for less than 4000. Probably closer to 5000.
The apartment I just left in Shanghai was 4000 for 55sqm, though it was in a prime location.

I'd hardly say the prices are way out. To rent in many of the nice districts in Dalian you're looking at quite a sum. My neighbour's house is up for rent at 3500+ and that's quite cheap for the area I live in.
If you want to live in a sweet pad that's what you'll expect to pay. And trust me there are many foreigners in Dalian who'll pay way more than that. I've met a handful of expats paying between 5000-8000 rmb.
