Tutoring English - Risky? 1 Year, 8 Months ago
I'm planning on moving to Dalian this fall to study Chinese @ DUFL, and I'd like to put my tesol certificate to use/make some extra cash by tutoring english on the side. I lived in Seoul last year and tutored quite a bit. Recently the Korean govt has been making extra efforts to crack down on foreigners teaching illegally/teaching privately for cash. That didn't concern me too much as I lived in the outskirts of Seoul and I wasn't planning on living in Korea for more than a year, so even if I was caught and deported it wouldn't be that much of a loss.

HOWEVER, I'm planning on investing 4 years of my life & money into China to learn Mandarin and get a degree - and I wouldn't take too keenly to being deported for teaching privately in the middle of that time and not be able to return...thus wasting a few years!!! Do any of you know of anyone who has been caught teaching privately and has been deported? Is it an issue at all in Dalian or does the government not really care? How risky is it in actuality?

What do yall recommend and what have your experiences taught you?

I seriously doubt if you would have any snags. It is not legal unless you have a Z visa, so know that. The Z visa entitles you to work.

However, comma, many pick up a little cash on the side tutoring, even teaching for corporations, but know it is unlawful.

do you need an employer to sponsor you up front in order to get a z visa? and can you attend classes under a z visa or do you specifically need a student visa?

could i get a z visa without having a job and also attend DUFL??

Make Chinese friends, and get some private students. At least 100 RMB per hour, cash in hand, and teach at their apartment. Don't advertise. Don't touch schools. No worries.

You can practice Chinese with the parents, and their kids practice English with you. If you are here for 4 years, then that is plenty of time to build up contacts. Just don't worry if things start a little slowly.
