It's obviously good advice since they are working for other people, but I'm still having trouble getting them to work. I tried Torpark and also followed the directions exactly for the Firefox option, but on both of them it just times out when I try to open livejournal. Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

tor sometimes times out. Actually, it often times out. I think in Torpark you can refresh/restart tor. In the standalone tor, you can stop and start tor by right-clicking on the little onion icon in the system tray (icons in bottom right of the screen, to the left of the clock in Windows XP).
I don't know much about Opera, so can't comment. But you can probably set up opera to use tor as a proxy, adding it as a SOCKS v5 proxy with IP address 127.0.0.1 and port 9050. That's what firefox (via foxyproxy) uses.
