Its difficult to know where the best beaches in Dalian are, and lets face it, you can't believe everything you read in the tourism guides. Therefore, if we all come together with our info/experiences of Dalian's beaches , we'll have a fair idea of the best places to check out around here this summer. Here goes:
1. Xinghai Beach
Overview: A real local beach with an old-fashioned 1980s carnival feel to it.
Where: Entrance at Xinghai Sq, just to the right of the giant helium-filled football.
Advantages: Easily accessible. Water is ok for swimming. Some water sports available such as surfing, peddlers, etc.
Disadvantages: Gets a bit crowded in peak times due to its central location.
Food & Drink: The usual chuans (1 RMB each) and cold beers such as Keller (4-5RMB each)
Admission: Free
2. Jinshatan
Overview: Large statue of Kwan Yin, sometimes referred to as the female Buddha, right in the middle of the water.
Where: From Xinghai, walk along Binghai Lu for about 20 mins - its the first beach you come to.
Advantages: Less crowded than Xinghai Beach. Large, shrub-covered cliffs face the water. Sand maybe is a little better than Xinghai, but still quite stony. Sheltered areas are available to rent for large parties, etc. Its location and features make it more peaceful than Xinghai.
Disadvantages: When the tide is out, the water is not very good for swimming as there is a lot of seaweed to get caught in - happened to my friends haha

Should be ok when the tide is in though.
Food and Drink: The usual
Admission: 2 RMB
3. Bangchuidao Beach
Overview: Tucked in around the back of a scenic park, facing Bangchuidao Island.
Where: On the Eastern end of Binghai Rd, close to Tiger Beach.
Advantages: Due to its location, more secluded than both Xinghai and Jinshatan.
Disadvantages: The one time I was there, when going in/out of the water there was a steep slope and a pretty strong undercurrent, which could easily drag you under. Maybe it was just that daybut be aware of it anyway to be safe.
Food and Drink: The usual
Admission: A bit pricey at around 30RMB, as you are paying for the entrance to the scenic park. However, if you tell them you are playing golf in the adjacent golf course, apparently they will let you in for free
I've only been to these beaches a few times last year and this year, so if you feel this info is inaccurate or incorrect please feel free to make the necessary changes. Also, any additional input about Dalians other beaches is appreciated!
