Racism - 2006/06/28 05:16
by Prof

I am new to this Forum and I like it so much I have made an honest effort to make a significant contribution.

Best to be a giver, not just a taker.I am also new to Dalian, so new I will not arrive until July 11.

Recently there were some posts here that were racist and offensive, with more than one poster being guilty.

Please remember that this is a public forum and that we foreigners are guests in an other's homeland. It is bad form to enter an other's home and start attacking and criticising your host.

I have heard from some of my Chinese brothers and sisters that they will no longer participate in this Forum because of anti-Chinese postings.

You may think that DalianExpat is for expats only, but without Chinese participation we are like the preacher preaching to the choir . Dalian is a Chinese city in China. We are guests. Our hosts are gracious and we should return their courtesy.

I am very serious about this. China bashing will ruin this web site. Be circumspect in what you post. Before posting ask if such comments are offensive to anyone. If they are, do not post them.

You may use the excuse that what you post is just the truth. But whose truth? There are always two sides, remember?

And, it is not mandatory that the "truth" be expressed.

If you do not like China or Chinese people or Chinese cumstoms, GO HOME, if they will have you back.Do not stick around where you are unhappy and ruin things for the rest of us.

Thank you.

[DalianXpat is a public forum and wishes to encourge open, honest discussion, though primarily related to Dalian. We apologize for several offensive posts made last week. We now have moderators and will post forum policies shortly. DalianXpat is very pleased that Prof and others are "givers" .]

Post edited by: jim, at: 2006/06/29 08:24

Prof - to be fair, the racism (I dont even think it considers calling it racism, more character deformation by a few new users really....) was mostly pointed at the foreign community by 1 or 2 chinese users - and that is a fair comment if you look back and check.

OK, there there were replies but look back and check dates/times and who posted to certify man....

also I have been a member and a regular poster on this site since this site was a baby back in June/July 2005 and living in Dalian since November 2003 and I've never, ever saw this before this hui fei came along mate.

no, It's all good you throwin in your 2 bobs worth, but you've really just reiterated what we all already know and really dont need to be told, firstly coz its not really the way it happened or happens here and secondly there was no chinese bashing man.... and thirdly coz this was dead and buried last week man....

there were a few comments people made, granted to generalise the chinese population, but mate, to be fair, they were replies to just as unfair comments specifically from jack and hui fei - c'mon when a person is either trying to get thier personal opinion across (especially when they're het up), or even if they have the brass monkeys to write what they really think inside (and lets be honest, there are only a few people that actually will freely express what they really wanna say when they have the chance to...) its literally human nature when someones on the defensive to bunch a group of people together and tell the rest of the world what u think about them and why....

no one is innocent of doing that at some point in their life, from a group of football fans from i.e Manchester (SCUM!) or on a more serious or general scale, a group/nation of people.... of course that is no excuse for anyone to do it, but we all know that it happens, whether its promoted or not.

but it takes 2 to have a little wiggle on the dancefloor mate and if we wanna get, school playground about it then, "she started it" - and to be honest thats the way that posting session was leaning towards.... waste of time.

But that aint gonna get us anywhere is it mate? and you aint even here yet - you must be reeling that youre on your way here after seeing all that bollocks....

let me just reassure you that dalian is nothing like the impression you must have got after seeing those posts - after you get here you will see those posts were literally an anomoly on here and in Dalian in general.

Finally, nobody ever said this site was for Expats only and on the old site front page a while back, im pretty sure it even had a welcome message mentioning all are welcome expat or otherwise - so again, thats already a given -

I will also garuntee you - 99% of the expat posters in this forum is neither racist or anti-chinese - I will speak for most of them as I have read their posts on a daily basis for a year - and even know a few married to local citizens/in business with locals etc.

We are here cos we wanna be, not cos we have to be. we are here cos we wanna be mate........ and we love it.

HEY MATE -I am cool!

It was just a friendly reminder cause so many of my Chinese friends in Dalian complained to me. I considered 3 out of 5 enough to mention something on the board. You are right I am not living in Dalian yet. I am still in Nanchang. But, I am a China old hand, if you know what I mean mate.

And mate, I do understand but it did need to be said for the benefit of our Chinese friends. By the way mate, I am in China because I want to be and I do not need the job, because I am retiired and aok with money, you know what I mean?

Sorry if you feel I was steppin on ur toes mate.

Because the way it was resolved left open wounds and I did my humble best to bring true closure
