Curry in a Hurry, Monday, 17 September 2007

Written by mamamia   -  View all my reviews  - Top 50 Reviewer

Worth a visit if you need some Curry in a Hurry! 5 kinds of curry - White, Red, Green, Yellow and Tandoori - with meat seafood, vegetables, or indian cheese. My favourites were the green prawn curry, and the red curried cheese. Still need to try the Tandoori.

The nan bread is great, really authentic. The menu could do with an upgrade and a greater variety of dishes, but I will definitely be back regularly for my curry fix. They make it to order as spicy or mild as you want. Eating with some uninitiated curry munchers we ordered 65% spicy, and that was already pretty hot! A good sign. Next time I will try 80%.

Last night I went to Abashi Curry... it was awsome!  Experienced the same Pakistani taste which I'm use to have back home... YUMMMY.  I ordered the Alo Methi (traditional potato dish) lassi, baryani, Coke, salad and nan... again awesome!   I just kept eating and eating.  Service was good and everyone was very friendly.  Saw many Chinese, (and some westerners), trying to understand how to eat nan with curry   Talked to the cook which was quite friendly with me and my friend, and we had a really good time there.

Abushi Curry House, Sunday, 29 July 2007

Written by rickus4   -  View all my reviews  - Top 50 Reviewer

Went to the Abushi last night with some Chinese and Western friends after the reviews on Dalianxpat. Not very busy when I arrived, probably about 12 people, the welcome and service was quick and attentative without being over the top. Beer was ice cold as was the water. Our waitress spoke good English and was knowledgable about the menu. English menu was brought as well as Chinese and some photos explained the sets. You could see the Indian chef through glass so no hygiene problems there. The curries were excellent and the Biryani acceptable. Naan breads were wonderful and lightly brushed with ghee, maybe some garlic naan would have been a good option as well. Tandoori chicken was well marinaded and beautifully cooked. We left with a bill for 350rmb for the five of us as we had quite a few extras including those succulent naan. A welcome addition to Dalians eating out scene and I will certainly go again. ps. the toilets are cleaned regularly and have paper and tissue as well as liquid soap. Heaven not having to hold your nose for those precious few minutes.

Good curry, clean restaurant!!, Thursday, 19 July 2007

My husband and I ate at the Dalian branch of this Japan-based Indian Curry restaurant last night, and for a moment we thought we were back in Japan. The restaurant was spotless! They even had clean, nicely decorated bathrooms stocked with toilet paper. The staff spoke Japanese and provided Japanese menus (the English menu didn't have the pictures or explanations that the Japanese menu did, but they did have an English menu). At the entrance, there was a window into their clean kitchen where we could watch the Indian chef making the nan. The food tasted great, with good presentation. The staff was very friendly, helpful, and prompt. And true to Japanese business tradition, when we left they gave us each a stamp card with one stamp on it. Written on the card in Japanese it explains to come back two more times to fill up the stamp card, and you'll get a free beer.

I had the chicken spinach curry set, and my husband had the "Indian del" curry set (an Indian bean). Both were very good. I also had a mango lassie (yogurt drink), which was not bad. The price for a curry is about 35RMB, and you can make it a set with nan, rice, and a mini-salad for an extra 18RMB.

Walking directions: If you're walking there from Zhongshan square, go down Yan'an Lu past Mango club and it's on the right corner of next street.

The United Nations of Curry, Monday, 25 June 2007

Went to Abashi last Saturday and the food was good. More about that later, but what really struck me was the mixture of clientele …there was a big group of Indians having a party, about 4 tables of Japanese, a few Laowai and, yes, even some Chinese! Very Cosmopolitan, and maybe what you would expect of a Japanese owned Indian Curry house in China.

As is typical of Japanese owned places, Abashi is spick and span. It’s also tastefully decked out with South Asian motifs and nick-nacks and has nice Japanese-style clean straight lines for the furniture.

The Chinese waitstaff will greet you in Japanese, “Irashaimase!” and most of them speak Japanese, but there’s one who can speak English. There are English menus too.

There are four types of curry: Red, Green, White, and Yellow. The Indian flag is green, red, and white, and Japanese are yellow so that might explain it.

Three of the curries - green, yellow and white - have a thick consistency.

Green has a spinach base and is the most expensive. The three others are the same price.

Yellow has a tomatoey tang.

White is creamy.

The Red curry has a soupy consistency and is a bit spicier than the others.

If you want them to spice any of them up a bit, just ask and they are happy to oblige. The white curry doesn’t really suit being spicy though.

You can get chicken, pork, and mutton curries (no Holy Cow!) and there are also mixed veg, and potato and aubergine available.

We tried all of the curry colours and they were all good. I don’t get to eat mutton that much in China so I loved the yellow mutton curry.

You can get rice, of course, but you really should eat your curry with a big naan bread. They are generously sized (if a bit pricey at 14 rmb) and delicious. They come in the shape of an elephant’s head with a long trunk, which is the Abashi symbol.

Wash down your curry and naan with a draught Asahi beer or a mango lassi and it should come to about 50 rmb a head.
