Like an old friend, Monday, 17 March 2008

No mistake there, Le Cafe Igosso is like an old friend, a place to go when all else fails but not only, a rare oasis of certainty, a second home where you know what you will get; no bad surprise in store!

The atmosphere is European, lots of wood (check the 4" thick full slab hardwood bar) and painted walls, nice windows, small tables well arranged, the lights are just right and the music is a gentle background that allows for a quiet conversation. It is one of those places that could have been there 100 years ago and give you the feeling it will always be there.

The menu is vast and the food satisfying - theme is Italian and I would qualify it as an arrangement of traditional family Italian dishes with a touch of new cuisine. Ask for the specials & I would recommend you tried the French baguette dipped in (very) spicy hot olive oil (not on the menu) and you must get a piece of the tiramisu (if they don't have it, as it happens sometimes, you'll have an excuse to come back)

The staff is welcoming, friendly, experienced, eager to please and as you stay longer in Dalian, you will find out that, incredibly, it is the only place in town where the Chefs, the Waiters and Barman are always the same (all other places change staff more often than the table clothes). It is a rare and comfortable feeling to know there is a place someone will recognize you and be happy to see you...

And, like with an old friend, you'll resume your conversations precisely where you left them at the last time around...

Good meal, Saturday, 23 February 2008

I went to Igosso for the first time yesterday. I had wanted to go there on new year's day but they were closed, and then on the day before CNY I tried to take my son there for lunch but the cooks were outside setting off firecrackers so I did not want to make them work. Yesterday after work, we stopped at Tesco's with my wife and then since it is across the road decided to try this place.

Overall the food was good although i think I was happier with my selection than my wife with hers. I had a Caesar salad which was pretty good. She had a sliced octopus with pesto which was also good but the portion was too small. For main course I had a blue cheese pizza which was excellent and she had some kind of chicken which was OK but a bit in the fatty side. For dessert we were a bit disappointed as they had no chocolate cake or NY cheese cake. In the end she had a normal cheese cake and I had a couple of excellent cookies. With a bottle of red Cotes du Rhone, and couple packs of cigs, this dinner cost us just about RMB50o. I think it was worth it because the food and wine were pretty good and so was the atmosphere and the service. I had read in a couple of previous reviews the service was bit slow, but I thought it was OK and they were quite attentive always replenishing your water glass and so on and spoke decent English.

Overall the best western food I have had so far in Dalian.

Nice place, wonderful atmosphere, Monday, 04 February 2008

It's a little hard to find, but worth the effort.
When you walk in you see standard white washed walls with a pretty nice decor with the feel of an Italian cafe. It's split into two levels with the second level set up as a balcony overlooking the first level.
The food was top notch, great pizza, really good alfredo, and decent sides.
The service was a bit slow though, it almost seemed like they forget about you after a while. Once you order, the food comes pretty quickly and the servers do a great job there.
I paid 200RMB the first time but we had some wine with the meal, and about 130 the second time, so I think the price is about what you would expect at a high end eatery.
Overall it's worth every cent.

Old European Flavor, Friday, 15 June 2007

Great food and service and a fantastic menu, I can't wait to go try more dishes. The wine menu looked a little pricey, but it was pages and pages long. Real desert too.

I had a pasta dish (ordinary) beef in red wine (excellent-small portion) Caesar Salad (wonderful)and NY style cheese cake--ask for the strawberry sauce (a 6 as cheese cake goes). The guy next to me was eating a steak and it sure looked good. Very western--old European even. I'll go back---I wanna try that steak.

Good Western Style Meal, Thursday, 14 June 2007

I finally went to Cafe Il Gosso with 3 friends Thursday night. We had not made reservations, so had to wait about 20 minutes for a table. But, it was worth it. Our Caesar salads were delicious even though the greens and dressing were not traditional for that salad. The braised beef in red wine sauce was tender and flavorful; the Spaghetti Bolognese was a little short on tomato sauce, but then we are in the habit of drowning our spaghetti in sauce. :-) Our cheescake and coffee dessert were a perfect ending for the meal. Service after seating was also excellent. We just drank water with the meal and a girl came by to refill our water glasses regularly. The table was cleared quickly as soon as one of us finished our dishes. Cost was a little higher than we have become accustomed to here, but obviously not too high because we want to eat there again!
