Good for Tapas,  Monday, 17 September 2007

I had dinner there last Saturday night, and was immediately impressed by the authentic Spanish atmosphere and the not-half-bad flamenco player. The place is suitable for casual dining, a business dinner or dating...

Service was friendly enough, with the waitresses speaking surprisingly good English. The Tapas menu is limited, especially the meat tapas. Still what we ordered was good, with the ham and cheese croquets probably being the best tasting (and most heart-arresting) pick.

The main courses offer really generous servings of meat and fish, though the good quality produce was drowned in too much gravy, and overpowering garlic. The sides of potato bravas were very good. The paella will have to wait for next time. We managed to stuff ourselv es silly, but paid the price at around RMB300 per head excluding drinks and dessert.

The wine list is quite fun for Dalian, with plenty of Spanish wines, aw well as Chilean, Italian, Australian and others. Prices are reasonable, but thevintage of the bottles in the menu does not match what they serve - so watch out! I ordered a bottle of what I thought was 1996 wine (from the label in the menu) and they gave me 2001 instead. They also opened the bottle without showing it to me first, so I didn't have the opportunity to send it back.

Despite this, probably the best environment for European food so far for me in Dalian, so I will be going back.

Curry in a Hurry,  Monday, 17 September 2007

Worth a visit if you need some Curry in a Hurry! 5 kinds of curry - White, Red, Green, Yellow and Tandoori - with meat seafood, vegetables, or indian cheese. My favourites were the green prawn curry, and the red curried cheese. Still need to try the Tandoori.

The nan bread is great, really authentic. The menu could do with an upgrade and a greater variety of dishes, but I will definitely be back regularly for my curry fix. They make it to order as spicy or mild as you want. Eating with some uninitiated curry munchers we ordered 65% spicy, and that was already pretty hot! A good sign. Next time I will try 80%.

Just fix the Laksa!,  Monday, 17 September 2007

I was pretty happy to find a SE Asian restaurant here in Dalian, and was not at all disappointed by the food, except for my favourite dish - the Laksa, which was really like noodles in thick gravy rather than a nice light coconut curry soup. Once they get this dish sorted out, I will be there every Sunday lunch!

The seafood is all good, especially the crabs and the fried whole fish, and it is a clean and pleasant environment with friendly service.

College Bar,  Monday, 17 September 2007

This place reminds me of all the college bars I used to hang out at - mainstream music and drunk girls showing off and being oggled and hit on by drunk guys. No class or style required here! Not bad fun, as long as you've had a few yourself, and are feeling a little feral! Friendly and efficient bar staff to help you get that way..

The toilet smells foul, so take a big breath before venturing in!
