Not a great buffet,  Monday, 11 February 2008

We just went there today for a second time and I found it a bit expensive this time as the buffet selection is really quite limited and the food quality is not all that great.

The buffet goes for RMB88 a head with half price for kids and free for babies. The first time we had been there, this price was inclusive of beer, but not this time. We had to pay an extra RMB32 per pitcher of beer.

Main thing is that they should improve the quality of their meats and the offering of hot dishes. But it was quite packed (with all Chinese customers) and they seemed to enjoy it.

In conclusion, I am pretty sure I will not go back for a while because in the end we paid RMB605 for 6 adults and 2 kids and we could have gone to a seafood place and paid the same for a good meal.

Wanbao is a good restaurant,  Monday, 11 February 2008

I went there with my family for new year and it was cheaper than I expected. Sure, we did pay RMB850 but the food was excellent and for 8 people that came in at RMB100 per head with drinks and good seafood.

The restaurant itself is really huge and the decoration a bit over the top. Lots of gold everywhere. And mirrors...

The service was attentive and each room has a private wash room which are all very clean.

Overall, I would recommend it especially for a group of 8-10 people as the rooms would otherwise be too big. Obviously it is not to be an everyday restaurant but when comparing its prices to top restaurants elsewhere pr even to any Western restaurant in Dalian then it is quite reasonable especially if you stay away from shark fin soup or abalone.

English books,  Monday, 04 February 2008

I went to this bookstore for the first time yesterday and I did not really know what to expect.
I used to live in Beijing where you can pretty much get whatever you want these days. I was surprised that they did have a few imported novels (more than I expected) and as usual in state owned bookstores all the classics printed locally.

They have quite a number of children's books and overall the prices were unbelievably reasonable. Much cheaper than elsewhere in China. RMB46 for an imported paperback. Too bad the selection on offer is so restricted.

If you are looking for this place, then go to the new world department storage main entrance and this is in the street perpendicular to that. You will see a yellow "wai wen shu dian" sign in hanzi on the side of the building. Also, it is just next to the main Dalian Xinhua bookstore.
