come chill at Brooklyn,  Saturday, 02 August 2008

Judging from the minimalistic and sleek storefront, you can tell Brooklyn Bar and Restaurant is a business wanting to make a statement in a coolness starved city. I walked in expecting something completely different from other establishments in Dalian and Brooklyn definitely surpassed all of my expectations. The friendly staff greeted us at the door and took us upstairs to the 2nd floor to our table. My friend and I looked over the cocktail list and proceeded to order a Wakeuptini and a Manhattan. I ordered the Wakeuptini and it was soooo good! Easily the best cocktail I've had during my 3 yrs here in Dalian. A shot of espresso shaken with Baileys, Kahlua and plenty of vodka did the trick. The Manhattan was mixed to perfection according to my friend. They even added Angostura Bitters to the Manhattan which is unheard of in Dalian but a staple in other cities. Although the price of cocktails range from 40 kuai to 60 kuai, the amount of alcohol in each cocktail was equivalent to 5 vodka tonics at Daves or Club Love. I heard they're going to start infusing their own vodkas soon!!!!!

Now to the food.... My friend and I started off with the dip plate which consisted of a house-made foccacia and flat bread and 3 dips that went along with it. They were hummus, chicken liver pate and another red sauce that I can't remember the name of. Beautifully presented and incredibly tasty. The sauces and bread seemed to compliment each other perfectly, allowing us to savor the contrasting flavors of each sauce while maintaining the original flavor of each. I then ordered a sausage and mushroom pizza and my friend ordered a cheeseburger. According to my server, the American born Chinese owner prepares the pizza dough and sauce every morning and is closely guarded as a 'secret.' I spent 4 yrs in NYC and it is the closest NY style pizza as you'll get outside NYC,period. The crust is crisp in spots, tender in others, with an appealing elasticity and a reassuring saltiness. Don't agree with Anna as I didn't taste a hint of sugar in the crust. Easily the best pizza in town! Brooklyn is spacious but cozy, it’s as nice a room to eat a pizza in as there is anywhere in the city. Definitely want to try the other dishes next time I'm there. Friendly staff, authentic food, tasty cocktails, great music and large projector and ping pong table on third floor make Brooklyn one of the front-runners for the best bar/restaurant of Dalian 2008.
