As promised, we went back to Olive garden. Where better to spend Valentine's night? It was an intresting evening, as we attended a curious medley concert at the Labour Cultural Hall on Zhongshan square before rocking up for our romantic dinner. The OG was offering a reasonably priced special menu (238 RMB for two people) but we decided on ala carte as there was no pasta or pizza on the specials. Boringly, we had Caesar salad, veggie pizza (as they were so good the previous time) and a very nice penne /salmon / cream pasta. I had a glass of red at 38RMB- only one choice available by the glass and I agree with previous reviews on the list and prices. The meal did not disappoint at just under 200RMB, but the evening was memorable more for the other clientele this time. We spent the entire meal listening to- having no option to not listen to, having carelessly forgotten to bring earplugs- one of the most boring old expats I have ever had the misfortune to encounter, holding forth non-stop.... Mr fang pi jing and his unfortunate lady companion were still there (by now, having a little argument) as we left and the staff were yawning. But don't let this put you off trying the OG at all! Unless you, too, are a fang pi jing......
My wife and I had lunch at the Olive Garden Feb 8, for most of the hour the only customers. Service was politely attentive and the staff also speak English. We ordered a vegetable pizza and Caesar salad; at lunchtimes they also provide gratis some nice bread rolls (2 each) and minestrone soup. This was an ample and very pleasant lunch. The pizza was the thin crust variety (an excellent non-cakey crust) and tasted great; the salad included a large helping of excellent grilled salmon and fresh Parmesan. With a choice of free coffee / tea, or dessert (which was excellent fresh cheesecake), I'd say the meal was well worth 87 RMB. This was our first visit but we'll definitely go back. In desperation I might eat Pizza Hut again some day but I'm very happy that I know about the Olive Garden and recommend it without reservation.
