Brando Pizza - Completely different experience,  Saturday, 19 May 2007

Some friends and myself visited Brando's after the Chinese New Years fireworks at Xinghai Square. When we entered, there were about 20 people scattered at random throughout the restaurant and 2 waitress. We were told, before we even sat down, that pizza was not available. This was disappointing as that is the entire reason I wanted to go there, however, we settled on coffee. We ordered 3 coffees and an orange juice. About 10 minutes after we ordered these coffees, one was served, thirty minutes later, the second coffee showed up, ten minutes after that the other coffee and the orange juice arrived. I was told the orange juice was fresh squeezed, but squeezed from frozen oranges. The coffee, on the other hand, tasted like the coffee grounds had sat in the coffee maker for a month. While we waited for the "coffee," we noticed that 3 groups who came in after us ordered pizza and received pizza, before our last coffee was served.

All in all, we spent 25 RMB each for some really bad coffee and dissatisfying service.

this Westerner's worst nightmare,  Wednesday, 02 May 2007

I know this is true of almost every place that a person can shop in China, but Carrefours seems the worst as far as crowding goes. Everytime I have been to the Carrefours on Huanghelu/Xi'anlu I get an stepped on, pushed, elbowed, kicked and crowded. I really don't care to even spend enough time inside the store to find out what kind of selection they have or what they're prices are like. I did manage to get over the overcrowding long enough one day to find they are one of the few stores in the city that actually sales margarine.

If you don't mind hundreds of people crowded in aisles barely big enough for 2 shopping carts and 30 minute check out lines, then Carrefours is the place for you.
