fun game night,  Friday, 31 August 2007

I haven't been there on a Sunday night yet, so I didn't see the rock scene. Someone told me they re-arrange the furniture for different occasions. I went this Wednesday for their Game Night and had a good time. There were lots of comfy red couches around tables, with some people playing card games. They also have a pool table, snooker, foosball, and darts.
We were the only ones there when we arrived early, but after 9:00 or 10ish people started coming in, drinking and mingling. There was a good mix of foreigners and Chinese. T he D.J. played fun & upbeat music. They had beer and a wide range of mixed shots (but no English drink menu); and they don't have food, only snacks like sunflower seeds.
It is a little hard to find if you're not familiar with the area. Maybe someone who knows it could post more detailed directions?
Overall, I really liked the atmosphere and I'll definitely go back.

fantastic steak, nice atmosphere,  Sunday, 26 August 2007

This bar/restaurant is one of the best envorinments we've found to have weekend lunch, dinner, or drinks and chat with friends. Unlike a lot of bars in Dalian, the music is at an appropriate volume level and you can actually hear each other's conversation. They have a few German draught beers and tasty food too. I highly recommend their Angus Short Rib steak and their chocolate dessert. You can order the steak a la carte at 68 RMB or in a big set that comes with soup, salad, fish, dessert, and coffee or tea for 168 RMB. They also have a few rooms upstairs that can be reserved for groups.

Good curry, clean restaurant!!,  Thursday, 19 July 2007

My husband and I ate at the Dalian branch of this Japan-based Indian Curry restaurant last night, and for a moment we thought we were back in Japan. The restaurant was spotless! They even had clean, nicely decorated bathrooms stocked with toilet paper. The staff spoke Japanese and provided Japanese menus (the English menu didn't have the pictures or explanations that the Japanese menu did, but they did have an English menu). At the entrance, there was a window into their clean kitchen where we could watch the Indian chef making the nan. The food tasted great, with good presentation. The staff was very friendly, helpful, and prompt. And true to Japanese business tradition, when we left they gave us each a stamp card with one stamp on it. Written on the card in Japanese it explains to come back two more times to fill up the stamp card, and you'll get a free beer.

I had the chicken spinach curry set, and my husband had the "Indian del" curry set (an Indian bean). Both were very good. I also had a mango lassie (yogurt drink), which was not bad. The price for a curry is about 35RMB, and you can make it a set with nan, rice, and a mini-salad for an extra 18RMB.

Walking directions: If you're walking there from Zhongshan square, go down Yan'an Lu past Mango club and it's on the right corner of next street.

Cream Tea: good cookies and breads,  Thursday, 28 June 2007

Small bakery / coffee shop near DaWai. There are a few little tables where you can sit and have your snack, or you can order as take out. They have a nice selection of baked desserts and breads, including wheat bread. The chocolate almond cookies are my favorite.
