Telling the Irish story in Dalian
=================================
Ireland's ambassador to China struck an optimistic tone in a
speech to leaders of Dalian's tech sector this week, drawing parallels
between his own country's economic transformation with this city's
success as a center for outsourcing and software development.

"Thirty years ago, Ireland was a poor country, the poorest in the
EU. We've become fairly successful in a fairly short period of time,"
Ambassador Declan Kelleher said. "This did not happen by accident."

The key, he stressed throughout the talk, was moving Ireland from
an agrarian economy to a "knowledge economy." Investments in education
and removal of trade barriers made the country attractive to foreign
direct investment, particularly from American companies. When Ireland
joined the European Union in 1973, it gained access to a large and
wealthy market. The simile was clear.

In a separate interview after the speech, Kelleher stressed the
growing cultural ties between Ireland and China and the need to
promote educational exchanges. He repeatedly said the two economies
are more cooperative than competitive.

Sunday Coffee: 10:30 a.m., Starbucks near Olympic Square

Six weeks ago it was just a crazy idea: Let's get some foreigners
together at a regular time and place and see what happens. Now, a
month and a half later, it's a time-honored tradition. Come network,
tell jokes, break bread (or chopsticks).

This happy gathering takes place every Sunday at the Olympic Square
Starbucks, starting around 10:30 a.m. Get there whenever you like,
stay as long as you like.

Oh, and last week Eddie's Bakery catered the event, giving us all
fresh (and delicious) bread to break for real.
