July 15, 2007 Dear DalianXpat members and friends: Summer is here, but Dalian pace shows no signs of slowing down. A bullet train in Dalian (?), Ikea and Intel break ground soon (more on Ikea later), the French Ambassador was in town, Eddie the Baker about to open in Kai Fa Qu, another 5 star hotel ( Grand Mecure) opens next month. Friday, July 13 HMILY Party at 7:00 pm Quiz Night at Tin Whistle Bar, 9:30 pm And Saturday is Bastille Day! Spiral Cow plays at Hopscotch We have a couple of free tickets if you want to pick up in the office (limit 2) In honor of Bastille Day, Olive Garden is offering a free drink to all diners! Ownar Cinema is showing Pirates of Carribean 3 in English Please don't forget the strong coffee at Sunday Expat Coffee in Olympic Square Last few weeks have had a diverse crowd and interesting, noisy Dalian conversations. Two weeks to the Beer Festival. Liaoning Intenational Business Association Meeting and Davos not far behind! All the events are here - Buffet dinners, parties, music ... Your event not here? Recent Reviews Ioana reports on the wonderful view, meat platter and impeccible service at Barolo . Speaking of meat, I forgot I was vegetarian and had a very good Angus steak at Leone's Charming Grill and Coffee shop. Also enjoyed/good coffee and western magazines. Stroller's and Hopscotch all getting good reports. Ron writes an interesting – but mixed - review article about new Bullet trains Dalian to Shenyang ("These trains are a step in the right direction, but only a start." ) Please keep sending the reviews. Thanks! More Dalian Happenings Sweden's Ikea will break ground next month (open late 2008)! Will be one of 10 largest Ikea stores in the world! (near Metro, B&Q) Had very interesting chat with Mr. Harald Prytz, of Furama Hotel, "Dalian's underdiscovered 5 star hotel", although the Utah State Senate seemed to have found it without problem. Actually I liked the comfy chairs and view from the 2nd floor, understated Prince Lounge where, for 38 rmb, you can have a coffee, decent conversation and also watch the building across Ren Min Lu finally being built (only took 10+ years!). Harald and I talked about some kind of lower cost summer activity for DalianXpat, so plesase watch for details. Also, the fitness center seems to be one of the focal points for the serious squash crowd. Visited Eddie's 77 Cafe (aka Eddie the Baker) in KFQ, near Anshan Square. Promises comfort foods: soups, reubens with real rye bread, burittos, BLT, salami, sandwiches, 6 am – 12 midnight. Pre-opening is July 17 – 1 month special 20% discount for DalianXpat! With the increase in membership, it has become difficult for the Moderators to control all the new postings that occur; and even more when the rules are not being followed. It takes money to provide and upgrade the services we offer – Directory, reviews, calendar, forum, newsletter, classifieds and now jobs and soon personals. And it takes money and training to provide good customer service when things go wrong. Advertising and sponsors do not cover our expenses. We don't even get a free coffee on Sunday mornings. We have to pay our own way. Over the next three months we project a short fall of 20,000 rmb, including 6,000 rmb this month. And we have a pressing need for more equipment this month. I am the first to say this website needs more improvement; I want to improve quality and reach, not cut back. (assuming you had the money) Cost of bus ride during Cultural Revolution was about 4 fen, which few people had and so most people walked. By comparison, in 1966 New York City cost $0.20 and is now $2.00 (an increase 10x while's Dalian's fare is now 25 times higher) Received this email recently from 1987 DUT graduate living in Orange County, California: “I'm a 100% Dalianese and born, raised in this one of the most beautiful beach city in China. I feel glad that we actually have a web site that gives information like daily event and some nice pictures. I've been living in the U.S. for 16 years and still dream about my childhood in Dalian almost every day. I miss that city so terribly and want to go back all the time.
