Looking for something to do in
Dalian and get exercise at the same time ? Hill walking might be just the thing. As you look around the city, there are plenty of hills and most of them have well-worn trails that enable you to experience nature in a spectacular way. This is the perfect time of the year to do hill walking.

The butterflies abound and you can even see a bird on occasion. What is really neat is that most hills have sporadic clearings where locals come and exercise. Tree limbs will be wrapped so a person can comfortably put his foot in a good stretch position.

Sometimes there will even be a temple-type gazebo where you can sit and rest, read, meditate, or have lunch. You may also come across a tomb. Many locals have claimed space for small gardens. I’ve seen eggplant, Chinese onion, corn, turnip, and pumpkin crops during my hill walks. To start your hill walking adventure, just take a walk to the nearest hill and look for a trail. You can be confident that the trail will traverse the whole hill, often on more than one level.
My favorite hill is called
Mt.
Dading . To get to it, take bus 101 or 708 to Malan Square and walk south to the
Malan
River (the one that is covered by concrete). There are several entry points to this hill, but I recommend going to the east and starting at that entry point. The nice thing about
Dalian’s hills is that wherever you come out, a taxi is probably nearby.
Sum1 in a forum post also had a recommendation. He said, “The hill behind the 2nd affiliated
hospital of
Dalian medical university [is a great place to go]. That’s the only hill from where you can see both city and sea at the same time. It’s a one or two hour walk from one end to another and on a clear day you can really enjoy the scenery."
So the hills of Dalian are waiting for your exploration.
