Superb zoo, Monday, 11 February 2008

My kids love zoos so I thought we would go and have a look at the Dalian one. We have just arrived from Beijing and the zoo there is terrible even if my kids still like it.

One word of warning, winter time is not the best time to visit any zoo but especially this one as it is so close to the sea and the wind can get quite cold. Also, the electric vehicles and the train that make visiting this zoo easier will not re-start before April 1. And some of the attractions are closed, ie. the elephant show

Another thing is that this zoo is in a pretty hilly area so be ready to walk up and down. Visitors with small kids should really go with a stroller as small kids will get quite tired.

Having said that, what we saw of it was magnificent. The setting is really superb and the animals have a lot of space to live. The enclosures for the lions and the tigers are really large. Of course, it is still a Chinese zoo so you still have the option to purchase a goat or what have you to feed the animals which may bother some foreign visitors.

The free-feeding area is really nice and you walk with emus and lamas roaming free around you.

You should make sure to look at the map before (which I did not do) as there are several distinct areas to this zoo. Today we only saw the newer part but we will be sure to be back to see the rest.

The price was quite high for China and we paid RMB280 for 6 adults and 2 kids and it would be more expensive in summer when you have to also buy a cable car ticket and there are shows and the train and so on. What really annoyed me about the price was the fact that dlzoo.com which is the zoo's website lists the entrance as RMB20 per adult in winter which is obviously a very outdated price. The management ought to update that.

But in conclusion, this was a very nice place to visit.

Lastly, a word of warning. Zone 1 is closed until the end of April. We tried to go there this weekend to see the monkey pits but were then told by a guard that only zone 2 is open until early April

visit the new area!, Saturday, 23 June 2007

The newer part -- an overall must, impressive, magnificent, entertaining, great walk..... gorgeous animals - regardless of the live chickens by the lion den!
Elephants show -- entertaining....
But stay away from the old part of the zoo... unless you want to see malnourished animals, zoo guests throwing food at them, sea lion being hit by trainer -- we were flabbergasted to say the least... waste of time and money....

Brief Introduction of Dalian Forest Zoo : it covers an area of 7.2 square km and is the city zoo with the largest area in the country. The zoo is composed of enclosed raising field and open wild raising field which are connected by cable cars. The Zoo has more than 3000 animals representing more than 150 species.
The 1200 meter air cable encompasses the highest peak in urban area of Dalian-West Mountain.
Bus route:
Enclosed raising field entrance:#60 Yingchun Rd –Bus #4,17,404,407,706(get off at Nanshidao Street),525,529,715(get off at the forest zoo)
Free raising area entrance:Silver Beach,West Binhai Rd –Bus #5,501,541,702(get off at the wild zoo)
Tel:82472535
Web:www.dlzoo.com
Entrance fee:120rmb(includes one way cable car)

We started our visit to the zoo with the Free raising area which is the newer part of the zoo.It took us 2 hours to visit everything.Very well organized, the animals are scattered along one single winding road. There is only one big loop for the area hosting the bears, the tigers and the lions.Other animals:elephants(with a big performance area),wolves, hyenas, giraffes, leopards, petting zoo, tropical rain forest hall and a bunch of lamas roaming free on the street. It was a bit shocking to see free animals but they looked pretty harmless.
The cable car ride to the second part of the zoo is fabulous. If you’re lucky enough to be there on a clear day the view is breathtaking. At some point you have a 360 degree view of Dalian. You are actually on top of the city and you can see Xinghai Square,TV Tower,Downtown,Binhai Lu,DDA and everything in between.
The Enclosed raising area is the old part of the zoo and it’s a bit disappointing.Pretty much the same animals(bears, tigers, lions, giraffes, elephants). In addition they have the seals, some monkeys and birds. And Pandas which were hiding. We didn't see them.
Overall it was a good trip. Our son had lots of fun, we had a good hike and a great cable car ride.
