I do not know if you ever try eating in total darkness?
If you have not, you can try this place. I was there last night with my wife and I must say that it was something very new to us.
However, in our own selfish opinions, this place still has plenty of room to improve. The theme is great. The cooking is really very normal. Usually, when we have no sense of sight, our sense of taste, smell, touch and sound will improve.
We placed our order and I had my cigarette at the front counter. After which we were led to the washing taps whereby we locked up our mobile phones and lighter. We were given an apron and a pair of plastic gloves. The we were led to a table in total darkness by a waiter. We were seated side by side with each other.
We ordered 2 different set menus and was served in a fast and impatient manner by the waiters (by their voices). Food was eaten by hand using plastic gloves. Desserts was served before we even figured out if the soup was a starter (as it was not warm) or dessert (as it was cold and sweet).
Prices for 2 includes 2 set menu, 1 beer and a fruit juice was RMB 256.00.
A better way to let us feel comfortable was to do it slowly and with some manners:-
1) Served us with a cold drink or hot drink when we are seated. Let us familarise with the darkness.
2) Food should be served slowly, course by course. Their tastes should be more contrasting. For instance, soup must be warm with some taste of e.g. mushroom, tomato etc.
3) There is seafood as part of the menu, they could do is to unshell the shrimps or at least tell us that they are serving shrimps with shell.
4) The beef was 3 small pieces and a few pieces of chicken with french fries "soaked" in tomato sauce. We need stronger contrasting dishes to enjoy the darkness.
5) Dessert was a fruit platter whereby ice-cream with different favours will be a better choice.
6) The air-con was not switched on and at 9pm they had a DJ spinning disco music.
My wife commented with a pun in Chinese, "this shop is black and I will call it a black shop (hei dian)".
I really hope they can improve so that we will have some places to bring our friends and customers when they are in Dalian.
