More Dalian Happenings

This summer we'll have several Intel visitors. Let's welcome them, our Russian visitors and all others to northeast China's most international city!

Had a pleasant chat with Michael Zhang, owner of
Bavarian Beer House on Gao'er Ji Lu.  He's planning to open another one in Shenyang later this year followed by one or two more in Dalian.  He wanted the word “beer” in the  restaurant's name because it is something he feels both locals and expats share in common.  Actually, Michael is also an wine/beer importer from Germany and other countries and plans to open a few 'wine cellars'.

Ramada has renovated its 2^nd floor restaurant and now offers different buffet each night (128 rmb + surcharge): M is Italian, T is Around the World, W is German Night, Th is Fresh is Best, F is Seafood, S is Chef's Choice and Sun is 'East Meets West'

Also visited the new French restaurant,
Tong Dan  on Gao'er Ji Lu, and talked with Chinese owner and the sous-chef, his younger brother , the latter who spent 3 ½ years in France learning his art at Le Cordon Bleu and then worked in a Michelin 2-star restaurant.  I thought the décor was pleasant, but straight-forward.  I hope they will use the outdoor space and wish them every success.   Any reviews? The restaurant is in a renovated Japanese building which unfortunately may be torn down someday.

And finally, on the next corner west #94 gao'er ji road/chang chun road overpass, had a most interesting talk with Henry Cheung, owner of
Shang Shu Yuan bookstore .It too is in a renovated Japanese home and a wonderful place for tea and conversation, although almost all of books are in Chinese (do check the Dalian architecture books, however). Our conversation was polite and respectful until Henry opened the door to a back room where he has collected a real treasure trove of Chinese materials: 200 year old books, Chinese grandfather clock, 1930s Japanese military map of Manchuria (in color) and a scrap book of wedding certificates, graduation records, rental agreements from post-liberation through the Cultural Revolution. One painting in this room uses several layers of color, a technique which is not understood.  The last known artist of this style is in his 90s.

Latest on the
Jun Bar , the popular Korean owned coffee house/cafe near LNU will reopen around July 1. Thanks plizman And I keep hearing rumors about a bar with American-style comfort food coming this fall.

Trivia question: During the cultural revolution what was the bus fare in Dalian? (assuming you had the money) I buy winner a drink at F2/Expat Night.

Dragon Boat Festival

Finally, please welcome Ella, a second year student at DUFL who will contribute articles about Dalian and traditional Chinese culture. Here's one about Dragon  Boat Festival:

The Dragon Boat Festival is approaching, so I write to introduce this Chinese traditional festival and its rice tamale (zong zi 粽子).  The 5th of May in the Lunar Calendar (Tuesday June 19, 2007)  is the Dragon Boat Festival every.  It also has a beautiful legend.  Qu Yuan(屈原)was an upright and honest officer in Chun Qin period (a period
of Chinese history).  He was framed by villains so he jumped into Mi Luo River.  People threw rice tamales into the river in case  the dragons ate his corpse.  So now we eat rice tamales and row dragon boats in honour of him.

Rice tamales are mainly made of glutinous rice.  Some kinds also have dates, meat, fruits and so on. These ingredients are packed by special leaves.  They also have a particular shape called "the shape of rice tamales".  After steaming or boiling them for 20 minutes, we can uncover the packed leaves, and see this white rice.  Dip a little sugar
or soy sauce, and then have a taste----sticky and sweet.
