Wanbao is a good restaurant, Monday, 11 February 2008

I went there with my family for new year and it was cheaper than I expected. Sure, we did pay RMB850 but the food was excellent and for 8 people that came in at RMB100 per head with drinks and good seafood.

The restaurant itself is really huge and the decoration a bit over the top. Lots of gold everywhere. And mirrors...

The service was attentive and each room has a private wash room which are all very clean.

Overall, I would recommend it especially for a group of 8-10 people as the rooms would otherwise be too big. Obviously it is not to be an everyday restaurant but when comparing its prices to top restaurants elsewhere pr even to any Western restaurant in Dalian then it is quite reasonable especially if you stay away from shark fin soup or abalone.

The Sheer Size of It, Friday, 08 February 2008

Written by brandbry   -  View all my reviews  - Top 50 Reviewer

Having lived in Seoul, South Korea and San Francisco, the prices for this restaurant seems mild compared to those cities. In fact, I'd say cheap. But we're talking China and, well, then I'd say it's expensive.

There were 4 of us, me, my wife and my two kids. We asked the hotel front desk to make a reservation. We purposely sat in the hall instead of a private room to experience the ambience.

We had 6 large roasted prawns, shredded pork, 3 bowls of rice, 1 sashmi plate, 1 large (and I mean large) dumpling, 1 veggie dish, black bean sauce clams, some soup made from the sashimi fish bones, jasmine tea (35 RMB) and 2 Tsing Tao beers (I think I had one more dish but I forget). The bill came out to be 500 RMB. My wife and I expected to pay equivalent to USD $100.

You have to go to this restaurant just to see the sheer size of it. Man, it's big. Having all those waitresses around, it's kinda unnerving but I guess it's better than having none around .... And what's with the BMW in the hall?

Overall, a great experience. Just to see all the sea creatures in the fish tank ... Fortunately, our waitress spoke some English and was able to explain how they cook certain dishes.

I would definitely go back there.

PS BTW, how do you eat those turtles? Does anybody? They seem so cute sitting there ...

Great Durian Puffs, Tuesday, 08 January 2008

Written by    -  View all my reviews  - Top 10 Reviewer

I will usually go there for business dinners with clients, bosses n colleagues, because  the company pays for the meals! The price is steep, but overall, its a nice place for dinner. I like the Uni(sea urchin) that they serve, because it's very fresh. Not forgetting the sashimi(s) which are extremely fresh too. I will recommend the durian puffs if u don't hate durian, its very good.
I will be going there soon for another company dinner which I will definely enjoy.

Step into a palace for a feed, Saturday, 05 January 2008

Really great place the moment I stepped into the bulding, I feel so overwhelmed. The lightings, the BMW sitting at the lobby, and the waitress leading you to the room.
Book before hand, and get a great room, so posh.
Food, as per normal in most seafood restaurant, great sashimi, as usual, try the live prawns, still jumping, I had to fight with the prawns to de-shell them.. delicious! Worth the fight!
Deep fried oyster is a NoNo... just like deep fried flour...although the oysters are big and juicy, tasteless after being coated with so much flour.
Steamed fish is great, real fresh, and the gravy is not too salty, just nice.
I won't mind going again, although it's kinda pricy, worth it I think, for the great ambience and good service.

Good food, Sunday, 29 July 2007

My husband and I took some Japanese guests to Wan Bao and they loved the place. It is very popular and not anymore expensive than the average Japanese restaurant around town. You choose what you want to eat - I recommend taking a look at the various fish and seafood on offer - its quite mind boggling. There is a menu but it didnt seem to have too many prices on there. You can choose where to be seated, in the lobby, up stairs around the balcony overlooking the foyer or in a private room.
Service is good and the staff are friendly. Would strongly suggest making a reservation on weekends because it is popular.
We would be taking guests back there again because everything was really good.
