Very good quality dishes and a good Italian wine selection will take you on a trip trough Sicily, Tuscany or Lombardy.
Located on the hill, the restaurant offers a great view of downtown area.

Not Sure What Happened Here, Monday, 03 March 2008

Previously this place was my favorite Italian Restuarant in Dalian. Not sure what has happened - maybe the chef has taken an extended vacation? I recently went for a nice St. Valentine's Day dinner. They had a set menu for the night, with some good dishes on the list. Not overly crowded, but most tables were full.

The food was just mediocre. Appetizer of Salmon (Think Lox) didn't taste all that fresh. Had some tasteless cheese in a tomato and cheese salad dish. Also overcooked mutton chops, seemed like these were not cooked to order but simply warmed up prior to serving. Usually the food here is so much better!!

The service here has also gone downhill. Had some trouble ordering in English. We switched to my bad Chinese and things got better. The timing of presenting the various dishes was way off, sometimes new dishes would arrive before the previous dishes were cleared. Had to resort to yelling "fú wù yuán" to get a waiter to our table several times. I did notice a few other tables having the same problem.

Bad Experience Albeit a Few Months Ago, Tuesday, 04 September 2007

First let me say my experience at Barolo was quite different than the other 2 reviews posted here. To be totally objective, my visit was several months ago and perhaps there has been a change in the kitchen for the better. So, if there was a change my review is outdated and moot so move on.

I went with a group of 10, and I totally agree the restaurant has very nice decor and can be romantic if in a date setting. But after the impressive first impression it all went down hill.

The food was inconsistent. The appetizer of cold cuts, cheeses and salad was a good start but my main dish of black seafood linguine was awful! I asked the noodles to be cooked al dente and I am not sure the server understood. When the linguine arrived I knew he did not understand, it was mushy and way over cooked. I ordered the pasta thinking since it is an Italian venue there staple of pasta would/should be one of their better dishes. It was not.

The others in my group ordered from lasagna to some meat dishes and again some was edible but all in all the entire group was quite disappointed after the impressive entrance to the eatery.

The final straw was the wine list. I agree they have a nice selection of wide ranging wines, both red and white, from key wine regions. However, the prices for many/most were so over the top that I almost fell over in my chair. Perhaps the typical practice of 2 to 3x retail price for a bottle I am accustomed to back in the US can not be applied here in Dalian and China. But, when I saw many familiar bottlings that layman who are not on expense accounts might order which were marked up 5 times or more above what it would cost retail I thought it was way over the top. My thought was the owner(s) of Barolo know they cater to the Expat and affulent Chinese crowd and are thinking we are either stupid, ignorant, or have money to burn to order any wine just because it is on the wine list in a very presentable restaurant. I did not.

Yesterday by luck we found this place. From the first moment after entering this restaurant you feel like in another world, like in a very romantic restaurant in Europe. We had a candle-light dinner in the 2nd floor, at the window overlooking downtown area. The romatic ambiente, the fowers and the lovely decoration made it very difficult to leave that place. They have a large wine-card with wines from all over the world, RMB 200 to 18000 (Rothschild) per bottle. Main dishes range from below below 100 to about 200 RMB. I had a fine Crapaccio with Ruccola (unfortunately the Ruccola was a little sweetend), followed by Osobucco Milanese and a excellent Tiramisu. The taste was generally excellent. A very romantic place!
We will come again!

Very fancy restaurant, pretty pricey for Dalian but the food is excellent. The service is impeccable. From the moment you enter the restaurant until you’re out you get their 100% attention.As I said the food is very tasty and is coming in a good size portion. However, in case you decide to go for a meat main course don’t expect to get a side dish. You better order a salad or other appetizer and ask them to bring it with the main course. I had the grilled meat platter which was a very good selection of beef,chicken,pork and lamb. Very tasty and very tender. If you’re not a meat lover you can still enjoy some nice pasta and pizza dishes .A good selection of wines which can compliment any dish and of course beer and soft drinks. We finished with some delicious desert and a cup of espresso coffee.
The ambience is great and if you get a window table you’ll enjoy a wonderful view of downtown.
We will definitely go back there.
