I believe humans get a lot done, not because we're smart, but because we have thumbs so we can make coffee.

~Flash Rosenberg

At least three new coffee houses in the last month or so! Tina's Coffee has a new location near the Neusoft dorms in Software Park. SPR Coffee is about to open a new location downtown (Wuhan Jie/You Hao Lu). And Amici Coffee has a comfortable store in the Manhattan Building just north of You Hao Square. Get your java on!

Living healthy in China, like anywhere else, requires effort. Here are some suggestions to consider in food preparation:

Safe Fruits and Vegetables

  • Keep food preparation surfaces clean.

  • Designate a shelf/ drawer in your fridge to store produce that you want to wash just before eating.

  • Discard shopping bags used to carry raw foods.

  • Leafy vegetables require special attention. Wash each leaf by hand if you are not going to cook them.

  • Remember that food handlers are the main source of contamination. Wash your hands before preparing food. Wash your hands after handling high-risk foods (raw chicken, duck, meat, unclean fruits and vegetables)

  • Wash foods that will be cooked.

  • Wash foods that will be eaten raw or unpeeled with a brush.

  • If you are extremely concerned about contamination, put fruit or vegetables in a tub of water. Add chlorine powder or liquid (Kao) until the water feels slippery to your fingers. Add a few drops of dish washing liquid. Let soak for 15 minutes. Rinse with distilled water.

Developing cultural understanding at "Sports Day"

by Amalia Giebitz

Photo by Ulla Marquardt It may be the closest these middle school students will ever come to the Olympic opening ceremonies, parading around the sports field of No. 7 Middle School in Dalian's Development Zone (Kaifaqu) last Friday. Tai chi fan dancers marched in to

the beat of traditional Chinese drums. Kids dressed as the Beijing 2008 Olympic mascots waved to the crowds as the announcer's introductions blared out over a loudspeaker. Each uniformed group marched on to the field, showing their stuff as they passed the grand stand, some even releasing colorful baloons into the air. All this for Sports Day held several times a year in schools and universities all over China. Each group represents their class in performances and competitions. This year the Dalian World Youth Academy (DWYA) added a Western flavor to the mix. They stood in jumbled rows in the middle of the field watching the precision color guard march in and one of their American teachers removed his cap as the Chinese national anthem played. It was one of those "China moments". You just wouldn't see something like this in America.

Some "China moments" are just quirky. Some are irritating. Some are completely enchanting and revitalize hope for the future of humanity. For the first time, this small band of Westerners, including students from America, Canada, Ecuador, Israel and Germany, were venturing into the distinctly Chinese Sports Day. And for the first time perhaps, the No. 7 students, teachers and parents, were watching how the Westerners would perform.

The students had mixed feeling about their ambassadorial role. They have never had such an overwhelmingly communal experience. There was little to no preparation on their part, and one could sense their inhibitions grow as they watched their Chinese counterparts in grand, synchronized choreographic displays that clearly took some serious work.

With the exception of the foot races, all the competitions required cooperation between two or more people. This was not a place for individual achievements to be glorified, and yet that was all these foreign students knew. They goofed off. They wandered around, senses overwhelmed with a variety of blaring sounds and streaming colors, and an intense awareness that they were being closely watched. What young adolescent likes that much scrutiny? Finally, they threw in the towel and went back to their classrooms.

On the plus side, their presence at No. 7 can no longer be ignored. Perhaps that was the No. 7 headmistress Ms. Niu's intention in inviting DWYA to participate. There had been no special announcement or introduction at the beginning of the school year to let the teachers and students know that an International Baccalaureate school was partnering with No. 7. Maybe the lack of explanation was intended to dissuade a sense of distinction. As it was, these students and their teachers were introduced with all the others in the unity of Sports Day. And maybe they got the message.

"People are having a lot of fun," said Itomar Manes, a 9th grader from Isreal at DWYA. "It’s not all about competition. People put a lot of hard work into it. It’s very organized. It’s not like other sports events."

So these foreign students and their Chinese counterparts now have a common experience. Both sides have open invitations of friendship. It will be interesting to watch how they develop. Building a bridge takes effort, and today a few bricks were laid on both sides of the gap.

All packages and letters should be taken to a China post office. Packages must be left unsealed in order to pass customs inspection at the post office. This is to ensure that no narcotics or antiquities are sent through the mail. Many post offices offer packing materials for a small cost.
