The heart will find the pathway home.
~Wilbur D. Nesbit

Sweet potatoes can be found on every corner, being sold by vendors with barrels for ovens. Who knows where one can find cranberry sauce? Do you have a great recipe for pumpkin pie? Post a note in the Forum. Share the bounty of the season...

Be Careful With Eggs
* Eggs may not go through the same selection criteria as your home country - occasionally you will find rotten or very old eggs when your purchase them. It is recommended that you check by cracking each egg to a bowl before added to other items.
* Eggs may carry viruses or salmonella bacteria inside and on their shells. Wash your hands after handling them.
* Egg yolks should not be runny or liquid.
* Avoid consuming raw eggs.

Beating the Cold
What you can do to keep Jack Frost's nipping to himself
by Amalia Giebitz
Ah...a nice hot bath and a cup of tea. What could be more comforting on a cold winter's day? How about also exfoliating every square inch of your body, followed by milk, egg and honey body-scrub, and finishing it off by baking in a steam or
A hot bath and cup of tea
dry heat sauna? And if you haven't been pampered enough, you can get a foot massage as you relax in a lounge chair in a large, cozy-warm room with the lights dimmed, and large screen TV with the sound turned down, showing the latest football match. Not in to sports? You've got your own personal screen right in front of you. Or you can just sit back, close your eyes and doze off.
Bath houses all over Dalian offer this kind of relief from the biting cold that is the Dongbei winter. The Siberian wind inspires the populace towards them, like moths to candle-light. It is both a tradition, and a necessity for those whose homes have no bathing facilities. Bath houses can be found near most large apartment compounds. They range in price and quality from the very cheap(3 RMB to enter) to the luxurious (300 RMB for just a massage). The experience described above, in a lovely and clean bath house near the library and post office in Kaifaqu, cost 133 RMB.
There are many ways to beat the cold this winter. If you like a more private pampering experience than the communal bath house offers, spas abound, both in the downtown area and Kaifaqu. Try out the Taipei Radiant Beauty and Skin Care Center in the Manhattan Tower, or the Champs-Ely sees, downtown.
How about a weekend getaway at the new Grand Mercure Hotel downtown? It has a wonderful spa that offers traditional Chinese and Balinese massage, aroma and hydro therapy, and rightfully boasts an Olympic-size heated pool with saunas and jacuzzis in both men's and women's changing rooms. With fabulous restaurants, an elegant jazz bar, and beautiful decor and furnishings, you'll really escape from Jack Frost's nasty nippings.
What about staying home, you ask? Why not make private arrangements with a masseuse from a hotel or salon? That's what Sohbee Teo, an expat wife in Kaifaqu, does. She describes a wonderful Sunday morning with breakfast, a massage, and relaxing with her husband.
Ulla Marquart, a professor and photographer, also living in Kaifaqu, says that she and her family keep warm, and beat colds, with combination one-two punch. First, nutrition. Chicken soup with ginger heats the body, she says. Lots of vitamin C sources, like fruit and multivitamins, boost the immune system. Secondly, she suggests a surprising mix of hot and cold water while bathing. It's called the "Kneipp Cure," a holistic, naturopathic treatment developed by Sebastian Kneipp in the late 1800's. It is said to stimulate the circulation and strengthen the body's immune defense system. Ulla says it's as easy as finishing with cold water at the end of a shower.
Many expats say at the first sign of a cold, they head to the bath house, and it never takes hold. Having experienced this first hand as her first winter in Dalian approaches, this writer swears by it now. It's even been said to be a great cure for jet-lag, as long as you head straight there after dropping your bags off after you return from a visit home.

DalianXpat is Growing
Greetings Xpat members and friends!
I'm very happy to report a few positive changes at DalianXpat. Amalia Giebitz has agreed to serve as managing editor of the Focus Dalian Magazine and our our e-zine, Dalian Scene. She will help us with a web site redesign as well. Watch for changes in navigation, as well as look and feel, in December. If you'd like to help out, let us know. There are plenty of ways to get involved.
Sumi Seissinger will give us a much needed boost in sales effort and general organizational issues.
Both Amalia and Sumi have past experience with media and working in expat organizations. Very important, both are high-energy people who want a supportive, lively international community in Dalian.
I'm not going away, but I recognize that the web site, magazine, newsletter and all the related issues have gotten bigger than I can handle. We need a team with experience and enthusiasm and I think we have better leadership now. There are still plenty of ways to be involved – web site or magazine.
And again, I must emphasize that a lot of people have helped put this web site and community together. It would not have grown the way it has without the effort of many people.
The December/January issue of the magazine is well under way - look for it December 1. As always, please send events to

Family Matters
Parenting is not an easy job, but it's probably the most important one there is. Fortunately, we're not alone in this endeavor. New to the Dalian scene is the Parent Empowerment Program. This training, offered by Shohreh Cope, a certified family consultant, helps parents understand behavior and misbehavior, develop skills in encouragement, help children maximize their cognitive abilities and engage in cooperation, and much more. Check out the free introductory night, November 30 or December 1.
