Just before New Year my friend from the States introduced me to the delights of the Erqi Square tailors, specifically an English-speaking one called Luke. I was very impressed with the quality of the clothes my friend already had from his shop, so decided to give it a try myself.
I ordered some wide-leg lined woollen trousers with pockets and a silky low-cut going out style top. Luke measured me up and then took me around to choose my fabric from the wide array of vendors surrounding his shop.
He bargained for me and made sure I got a good deal (don't worry, I've been in China for a while and usually know when I'm being grossly overcharged!) The final price will include fabric and the tailor's work. For my two items it came to around 300 yuan.
Ten days later I went back to pick up my clothes and the top was perfect, but the trousers were a little too big and too long. No problem. They were adjusted free of charge and when I went back the next day all was fine.
The quality looks and feels great and I'm very pleased with the fit. Another girl I know looks through magazines to find styles from Prada, Gucci and Armani and gets the tailor to copy them. She's had some excellent results and has sent loads of fantastic clothes back to the States.
Generally I find it so hard to buy nice clothes in China.
Luckily, I can just about find ones that fit, but finding decent styles is another matter. Everything seems to be festooned with sequins, lace and other tacky things.
Or just plain ugly. So be brave and try the tailor
My 2 room mates from England Anika and Natasha had womens suits made this week by a tailor and today the final product was picked up...2 skirts and matching jackets...a shirt each...total of RMB 460 each.
they are both very happy with the outcome...Caryl
i was at er qi square today, but wondering where the tailors are located exactly. I could find them. I did find 2 large market, with many clothing sellers. But i couldn't find the tailors. Did i miss the right floor? or is it somewhere else? Can someone help me out?

The market where I found the tailors is about 1 block NE of Erqi square (rpg it sounds like you were in the right place). It is quite large. The tailors are on the northmost section of the ground floor, and the materials dealers are located directly above them. I was lucky to have someone to translate for me as I didn't know the words for things like "cuff" or "collar".
Two full woolen suits with two pairs of trousers each for a total of 800 yuan.
