Certainly the battle of the nightclubs continues, with both Love Club and Sunny night Club having plenty of discussion in the nightlife forum. We wish them both success and all who contribute to making Dalian a livelier city!
All of the hotels are having promotions. Nikko is running a very good Pizza Promotion this month for 48 rmb ( more below). Paulaner at Kempinski will every outdoor BBQ every weekend evening starting in a week.
My Door is having regular Happy Hour for folks in the Software Park, Tin Whistle on Thursday Dalian International American School has excellent buffet every Wednesday
Plus Toastmasters ( Saturday) , Chinese corners, Bowling Night (Tuesday)

Enjoyed a wonderful dinner/wine at Kempinski in March, the first of a series the hotel is planning. The food of course was wonderful (Goose Liver, Grilled Salmon, Australian Rib Eye steak and more) and a series of New Zealand wines, sponsored by ASC wines - one of the major importers. New Zealand is a bit cooler than France or California, so the wines are a bit stronger. Look for next Winemaker's dinner on May 23 (Australian wines).
We also caught a meeting of Chateau Wine Club (at the Bayshore Hotel) and Shangri-la also had a wine dinner.

On April 27, Cheung Kong Global MBA (CKGSB), a world known MBA program in Shanghai, will be in Dalian to introduce the school, its MBA program and financial options to qualified students (late 20s to early 30s, 2-3 years professional work experience, good English). Expats are especially encouraged to attend - look for details on the website.
Renovations
People's Culture Center is undergoing a 50 million RMB renovation. Built in 1951 with help from the Russians, the buildling will have new sound, lighting systems, furniture, more space (main theater and smaller rooms), mechanical stage. Look for completion by September. And conductor Wang, who studied in Japan, has returned to teaching in Shenyang.
Some of my favorite (and cheapest) collection of Korean restaurants are in the basement of the Korean fashion building/hotel across from train station and 101 terminal. They too are being renovated. Certainly hygiene will increase, hope not the prices.
By the way, has anyone been inside the new Xi Wang Tower (another building with a long story). With the vaguely art deco light fixtures, marble floor, high ceiling and room, tastful lobby (complete with huge TV showing CNN), no wonder Dalian is getting more and more world news!! Hotels:The residential tower of Kempinski Hotel will be converted to hotel, at a standard even a step above the existing hotel tower. It is under full renovation (3 rooms converted into 2, all kinds of new amenities). Spring wedding in Labour Park? Kempinski Wedding Center will open next week.
Had a couple of long conversations with outgoing, down-to-earth Nicholas Solari, new Nikko Hotel GM, originally from Lausanne, Switzerland, who has been here 1 month. He's been in China for many years, including Viking Cruises on Yangzte River and of course many hotels. Nicholas' immediate goal is getting both expats and locals back into the hotel. He's a food lover (worked in the family restaurant) and if The Pizza Promotion/April Delicacy is example of what's coming he is going to be a big success. For 48 rmb during April, we enjoyed a very good pizza with right crust (each additional toppings only 3 rmb) followed by a pleasant surprise. We'll be back soon! Locals don't pay the service fee. (No promises but lao wei might want to tell the staff how many years you've been in Dalian. ) Also Nikko has a drink special for 38 in lobby lounge. And do try the Sichuan Peppercorn chocolates in their JerOme collection, this is the real thing.
More new GMs: Shangri-la's arrives soon. The Dalian Intercontintental (You Hao Square) has a sign up and New World (serviced apartments/hotel) GM is in town. (For new arrivals - this is the building that's been under construction for 10 years on Ren Min Lu). Look for Howard Johnson's 5-star to open in Xianghai Square by summer.

Not all of us stay in 5-star hotels and two Motel 168 have opened recently - one in You Hao Square and one near Carrefour in Sanba Square (near B&Q). Any feedback?
